Through Positive Eyes is a collaborative photo-storytelling project by 130 people living with HIV and AIDS around the world.
All have participated in workshops led by South African photographer Gideon Mendel, with photo educator Crispin Hughes, and David Gere, director of the Art & Global Health Center at the University of California--Los Angeles (UCLA). The project chronicles a very particular moment in the epidemic, when effective treatment is available to some, not all, and when the enduring stigma associated with HIV and AIDS has become entrenched, a major roadblock to both prevention and treatment. The participants in the project have volunteered to tell their stories, in words and in photographs, empowering themselves in order to banish stigma. For the creation of the Partera Chair, EWE looked deep into the past and found its inspiration from the shape of a birthing chair commonly used in Mexico, while making their own abstraction.
The chair sits low with integrity on top of its two base legs, the dramatic character and expression is the result of a radical volume that holds a wide horizontal extended seat intersected by a long perpendicular backrest.The chair is embracing the combination of curved and angular surfaces.
The shapes and textures are created with basic tools by hand and finished on its surface with an irregular carved skin, built out of parota wood with a chisel and a chainsaw by the expert hands. Finally, the wood has been burnt and sealed creating a deep, dark, rich color. The result is simple yet dramatic.

In The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion, curator and critic Antwaun Sargent addresses a radical transformation taking place in fashion and art today.
The featuring of the Black figure and Black runway and cover models in the media and art has been one marker of increasingly inclusive fashion and art communities. More critically, however, the contemporary visual vocabulary around beauty and the body has been reinfused with new vitality and substance thanks to an increase in powerful images authored by an international community of Black photographers. In a richly illustrated essay, Sargent opens up the conversation around the role of the Black body in the marketplace; the cross-pollination between art, fashion, and culture in constructing an image; and the institutional barriers that have historically been an impediment to Black photographers participating more fully in the fashion (and art) industries.
Fifteen artist portfolios feature the brightest contemporary fashion photographers, including Tyler Mitchell, the first Black photographer hired to shoot a cover story for American Vogue; Campbell Addy, founder of the Nii Agency and journal; and Nadine Ijewere, whose early series title, The Misrepresentation of Representation, says it all. The Ibibio people often play with proportions in their masks to intentionally distort the face.
They have an overarching theme of contrasting male and female masks by using dark and light colors, respectively. Feminine masks are decorated with light colors such as white. Their features are delicate to emphasize their femininity. On the other hand, masculine masks use dark colors to represent the mystic forces of the forest. These masks often have large features and are created to be intentionally ugly. They achieve this by distorting the features in unnatural manners such as having bulging eyes or misplaced mouths.
The exact artist and date of the mask is unknown, but it likely dates to the first half of the 20th century. From Nigeria.

London designer Anthony Dickens was inspired by the traditional Japanese lantern made from washi paper, which dates back to the 14th century.
The paper, used by Isamu Noguchi to create the famous Akari lamps, is resilient and ductile, even malleable. It has a warm texture that filters in a soft, gentle light. Santa & Cole relies on the hands of experts in the Japanese city of Mito for manufacturing the paper, one of the cities specialized in its production.
Tekiò, the Japanese word for adaptation, merges ancient artisan techniques with LED technology that enables control of intensity and color temperature. Linear or circular shapes can be created by combining various modules.

The foundation of the the Noctambule series is a transparent hand-blown glass cylinder, surrounded on both top and bottom by discrete LED technology. Baule mblo mask, early 20th century, Ivory Coast.
Baule masks correspond to several types of dances: the Gba Gba, the Bonu Amuen, the Mblo, and the Goli. They never represent ancestors, and are always worn by men.
In Baule communities, Mblo performances feature masked dancers who impersonate familiar subjects, ranging from animals to human caricatures. Mblo masks are one of the oldest of Baule art forms. These refined human face masks are usually portraits of particular known individuals.
Mblo masks embody the core Baule sculpture style. Lustrous curving surfaces, suggesting clean, healthy, well-fed skin, are set off by delicately textured zones representing coiffures, scarifications, and other ornaments. The idealized faces are introspective, with high foreheads and large, downcast eyes. Ornaments above the face – birds, combs, horns, faces, and other decorative motifs – are chosen for their beauty, and have no iconographic significance.
