This image was taken in the garden of the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House Studio Museum. The famous artist couple lived and worked here, in two different houses separated by a bridge. It was shot as a double exposure on medium format film.

This photo series is a limited edition collaboration with Brooklyn-based photographer, Robert Malmberg, exploring Mexico City through the lens of the traveler. “The energy of Mexico City was at once vibrant and permeating, bursting with exotic desert plants and primary colors,” notes Malmberg. In six photographs, he presents many facets of Mexico City and the area around. This piece is a closeup of cactus growing in desert garden at the National Museum of Anthropology. Robert Malmberg is an award-wining photographer and filmmaker specializing in studio portraiture, still life, travel, and fine art photography. He also shoots with the historic wet collodion process, combining hand mixed darkroom recipes with antique large format cameras.

Terracotta Classic Kuba Cloth Modern Ottoman With Metal Legs

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950's, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.
This pitcher is hand-molded from black clay.

Please note that black clay is porous. While these types of vessels are commonly used to contain liquid in Mexico, they will sweat out the liquid and leave charming white rings around the black clay. Traditionally, they are set on the table with a cloth when used to serve liquid. If you wish to avoid condensation or color change, place a glass or plastic container within the vessel to hold water for flowers or plants, for example, or use them purely decoratively.
Care and cleaning: Your black clay tableware was created in traditional craft techniques and should be handled with care to help ensure its preservation. Please clean with water and soap. Do not clean in dishwasher.

The animal was revered in Inca times and possessed a religious significance; only royalty were allowed to wear the fine textile. Alpaca herds are bred specifically for their fiber, woven into the signature Peruvian textile. Baby alpaca fiber is especially luxurious, soft, and beautiful. This throw was handcrafted in Peru from 100% Peruvian baby alpaca. The alpaca is sheared, leaving the animal unharmed and handled ethically.

Classic Kantha textiles are characterized by this stitch, which is often used to produce motifs such as flowers, birds, animals, and other folk scenes from everyday activities. Kantha is traditionally used to create men’s and women’s garments, such as dhotis and saris. In addition to garments, several layers of cloth can be embroidered together to create quilts and coverings for mirrors, boxes, pillows, and other decorative objects. Etkie works with Native American artisans in New Mexico to create jewelry inspired by the landscape and culture of the Southwest. St. Frank and Etkie collaborated to design this contemporary cuff based on antique Navajo rug motifs. Each piece is hand-beaded on a traditional Navajo loom. The diamond design represents the Navajo homeland surrounded by four sacred mountains. The cross signifies the deity Na'ashjéii Asdzáá, or Spider Grandmother, who taught the Navajo the art of weaving and is their constant helper and benefactor. The Vallero Star - vallero meaning "of the valley" in Spanish - was adapted from Spanish weaving.

The only surviving descendants of the early Vietnamese, the Muong have maintained their traditional way of life in the mountains of northern Vietnam. In Muong culture, young girls inherit weaving techniques from their mothers beginning at an early age. The harmonious patterns are colored by natural indigo dyes. Because their religious beliefs are rooted in animism _ the belief in a supernatural power that enlivens the material world _ the intricate designs of their textiles are said to subtly depict the weavers' souls.

Provenance

This pillow is made from fabric that is based on a handwoven piece made from pure Tibetan sheep's wool to produce a fabric called Sherma. Sherma is one of the finest woven textiles made in Tibet. This super-thin wool takes much longer to spin than other, thicker wools, and is one of the thinnest wools that can be created on a loom. After spinning, the wool is dyed using natural plant-based dyes and then woven into strips. The strips are stitched together to form the traditional Tibetan apron called pangden. These aprons are characterized by a three panel, multi-colored stripe design.
The pangden communicates two aspects of a Tibetan woman's identity. Traditionally, only married women wore aprons, so the apron generally serves as a mark of marital status. Second, the stripe patterns and colors are unique to different regions of Tibet, thus revealing the woman's origin. This pangden is from the Panam County of the Shegatse Region in the southwestern part of Tibet.

This pillow is made from fabric inspired by our Indigo textile. In ancient times, from opulent Egypt to stark West Africa, fabric has been dyed a mysterious, beautiful blue. This is a replica of our popular St. Frank textile; the indigo color, or "gold blue," is a symbol of the link between heaven and earth. Through a careful process, indigo can produce a vast palette of blue hues; traditional dyers would ask their customers' color preferences, from the palest sky to the deepest midnight. Dye vats alone take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dye is applied to the material, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery. Our fabric by the yard is made of Belgian linen and cotton, and printed in the USA.

The Blue Tenango embroidered textile is carefully applied to a linen substrate and bordered with a traditional linen-covered mat. This product is offered in four framing options: black, white, and maple mouldings in a modern cap, and lucite. A white linen is paired with our wood mouldings, set back with linen-covered spacers; a natural flax linen is paired with the lucite. Our signature gold St. Frank plate is featured in the bottom right-hand corner of each piece.

Provenance

This intricate St. Frank embroidery is handmade by the indigenous Otomí people of Tenango de Doria in central Mexico.  The Otomí faced an economic crisis in the 1960s caused by severe drought in their predominantly subsistence farming region. As an alternative source of income, the Otomí women popularized the Tenango embroidery textile craft through the revival of an ancestral technique.
Today, skilled Otomí textile artists are in demand outside of their local communities as appreciation for this vibrant embroidery has traveled well beyond its humble origins. In recent years, Otomí embroidery has become an iconic textile print, appearing in the work of top interior and fashion designers. Even the cult French fashion house, Hermès, collaborated with Otomí artists to release an exclusive line of Hermès iconic scarves featuring the distinctive Tenango designs.
The symbolism and iconography in this textile design reflect time-honored traditions and beliefs of harmony with nature. The whimsical flora and fauna embroidered motifs can be traced back to pre-Aztec Mesoamerica and are said to originate from cave paintings. Textile designers draw the animals and plants from memories, dreams, and mythical imagination; the forms are then embroidered. Each character bears significance. For example, the deer is said to carry wealth; the rooster, to announce a good harvest. Therefore, this piece offers not only its homage to the Otomí heritage, but also the notion of luck and prosperity.
