Alkanet and beetroot give this stain its rich color and earthy scent, with just a touch of essential oil of rose geranium. Jaye Fishel (Bullhorn Press) and Rachel Berks (Otherwild) initiated this project after the Bullhorn Press studio moved into the storefront occupied by Otherwild, a hybrid retail store and design studio in Los Angeles specializing in the handmade and design-driven. Fishel has made work using a letterpress since 2006, with the goal of creating affordable art in the tradition of the democratic multiple. Berks collaborates with numerous artists on the design of books and other printed matter. The pair’s shared interests and skills led them to invite Los Angeles-based artists to create print editions on the letterpress. The project aims, in part, to exploit, diversify and expand the art-making possibilities of the letterpress.

Otherwild recreated this "the future is female" pin, originally made by Liza Cowan/White Mare Buttons in 1974, the slogan for NYC's first woman's bookstore Labyris Books. Photo & text by Liza Cowan / DYKE A QUARTERLY.

T he original “The Future Is Female” T-shirt design was made for Labyris Books, the first women’s bookstore in New York City, which was opened in 1972 by Jane Lurie and Marizel Rios. The photographer Liza Cowan took a picture of musician Alix Dobkin, her girlfriend at the time, wearing it in 1975. The photograph was done for a slide show she was working on called: " What the Well Dressed Dyke Will Wear."
This slogan has lasted through the decades and is reemerging as an empowering statement for all, as female-identified bodies and rights remain under attack. Inflexibile and compulsory sexual and gender binaries are used to oppress and deny people their humanity and agency. Otherwild believes in an inclusive, expanded and fluid notion of gender expression, identities and feminisms. We support liberation, embrace our trans sisters and brothers, and call for the end of patriarchal ideology, domination, oppression and violence. We believe that “The Future is Female” is the past, the present and the future, and is language that resonates.

Petroleum Jelly has found its far superior replacement. This is one of the most used products here at the Fat and the Moon household. Sunflower oil infused with calendula, St. John’s wort and homegrown yerba mansa has healing and regenerating medicinal properties that are both gentle and effective. Calendula is great for treating slow-healing cuts and stimulates the production of collagen at wound sites which minimizes scarring. St John’s Wort has healing properties both internally and externally and works to treat cuts and burns. Yerba mansa is a lesser known herb, native to these here parts in CA--the leaves promote skin repair.
This salve is great for healing scrapes, cuts, burns and bites as well as chapped and cracked hands. We also use it as a lip balm, and a knee and elbow softener.
