Jaye Fishel (Bullhorn Press) and Rachel Berks (Otherwild) initiated this project after the Bullhorn Press studio moved into the storefront occupied by Otherwild, a hybrid retail store and design studio in Los Angeles specializing in the handmade and design-driven. Fishel has made work using a letterpress since 2006, with the goal of creating affordable art in the tradition of the democratic multiple. Berks collaborates with numerous artists on the design of books and other printed matter. The pair’s shared interests and skills led them to invite Los Angeles-based artists to create print editions on the letterpress. The project aims, in part, to exploit, diversify and expand the art-making possibilities of the letterpress.

Their performance practice is steeped in ideas of queer belonging and desire and the intersections of a non-binary, brown identity. Their work spans across installation, sculpture photography, video and live performance. Outside of the studio, they also work to produce events and platforms for a variety of queer performance and drag.

Ranging from figurative representation to gestural abstraction, monumental landscape paintings to more intimate portraits, the oeuvre of American painter Leidy Churchman channels his artistic and literary influences, friendships, moods, surrounding landscapes and the visual iconography of divergent religions and philosophies. Crocodile highlights the artist’s investigations into consciousness in his renderings of anthropomorphic animals and psychological states; his appropriation of existing artworks and aesthetics; and his recasting of various signs and symbols.
