Poetics of the Handmade features a group of artists based in Latin America whose works of art are made by the artists’ own hands. While many of the artists, contemporaries tend toward a “post-studio” approach—with assistants producing their work—this group explores the close relationship that exists between a person and his or her craft. The artists, interest in transformation and process has led them to produce works that are painstakingly handcrafted from a wide range of materials. They have found poetry in the depiction of quotidian objects and in the powerful resonance of small actions. Included in the exhibition are Eduardo Abaroa (Mexico), Magdalena Atria (Chile), Mónica Bengoa (Chile), Fernando Bryce (Peru), Darío Escobar (Guatemala), Máximo González (Argentina), Marco Maggi (Uruguay), and Livia Marin (Chile). Presenting widely differing approaches, the eight artists will be represented by large-scale installations and select bodies of work. While Atria, Escobar, and Bryce show recent work, Abaroa, Bengoa, and González present new pieces created for this occasion.

‘Rebel Dabble Babble’ is a collaboration between Paul McCarthy and his son Damon McCarthy. 'Rebel Dabble Babble’ is a large and complex installation and video projection work originally inspired by both Nicholas Ray’s 1955 classic Hollywood film ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and the furious rumors that swirled around the off-set relationships between its director and his stars James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo. This densely layered opus confronts definitions of power and role-playing, and expands far beyond the ’50s movie and related legends. Ultimately, ‘Rebel Dabble Babble’ is a meditation upon the archetypes and Oedipal tensions that define family dynamics as they have been played out in private homes, in the evolution of art history, and in the role of the entertainment industry in shaping our expectations and self-images.

This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Ecstatic Truth: The Photography of Florian Maier-Aichen, on view at MOCA June – September 2007.
Florian Maier-Aichen’s photographic work portrays natural, industrial, and cultural landscapes with stylized eccentricity. Employing tropes of documentary photography in unconventional ways, Maier-Aichen creates sublime images rich with reference and allusion. While his richly hued photographs of the California coast, the Alps, and other locales are seductively beautiful in their expansive viewpoints, they are also nuanced with a subtle disquiet and criticality.

German by birth and educated at the University of Essen and the University of California, Los Angeles, Maier-Aichen challenges the stringent rules of contemporary German photography as typified by the use of diffused light and a straightforward, objective point of view. Investigating more flexible photographic strategies, Maier-Aichen begins with a traditional large-format image captured on film, framing his subjects from extreme angles or aerial views. His practice is a modern-day form of combination-printing, weaving disparate images from distinct sources and applying myriad creative adjustments to each in order to produce a seamless photograph that does not betray its intricate and layered composition. Like “photogenic matrices,” these works are more closely aligned with the conventional production of a painter than that of a photographer. In this way, Maier-Aichen’s thread of influence can be traced back to the nascence of photography, when practitioners sought ways to adapt the medium to painterly ends. Maier-Aichen’s unique palette, unconventional vantage points, and combination of photographs with hand-rendered and dropped-in details have yielded a body of work that is rich with historical and contemporary references.

There Will Never Be Silence pays homage to both John Cage and the MoMA exhibition There Will Never Be Silence: Scoring John Cage's 4'33" (2013–14).
In a 1954 letter that Cage wrote regarding his so-called "silent piece" 4'33" (1952), he stated "the piece is not actually silent (there will never be silence…)." Sixty years after Cage's letter, the debut album for the exhibition, reconsiders silence, the lack of silence and the status of recorded sound.  The double LP features four compositions presented by artists Kevin Beasley, Lizzi Bougatsos, Sabisha Friedberg and Yasunao Tone. Their works shed light on how far Cage's ideas about sound have progressed in diverging directions.

The first major United States retrospective of the work of New York-based artist Lawrence Weiner (b.1942, Bronx, NY), one of the key figures associated with the emergence and foundations of conceptual art in the 1960s, Lawrence Weiner: AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE provides a comprehensive examination of Weiner’s remarkable and cohesive oeuvre, assembling key selections and bodies of work from throughout his 40-year career. Lawrence Weiner has defined art as “the relationship of human beings to objects and objects to objects in relation to human beings,” and that premise remains at the core of all of his work. The conditions of a work of art have been the basis of Weiner’s approach since 1967, using language as a material object. The exhibition represents the full range of Weiner’s practice, from the Propeller and Removal paintings of the 1960s, to the artist’s “specific and general” works—language-based pieces that have maintained a consistent presence in his work since 1968. The exhibition also includes the full breadth of his production with works on paper, films, videos, books, posters, public commissions, multiples, and audio works. "Marvin with His Skateboard" shows its title subject, defiant, in a "Smiths" T-shirt with its lettering crossed out and "Ramones" written in. Other young models do homework, play guitar, and model even wittier T-shirts. But it's not as direct as all that: A few pages on, the slackers are interleaved with "Margaret Mead in Authentic Samoan Dress," and then later "Buster Keaton on Crutches."

Elizabeth "Betty" Woodman (1930 - 2018) was an American ceramic artist who began her career as a production potter in the 1950s. Her career moved from functional pottery to works of art, culminating in a retrospective show - the first for a living, female ceramicist - at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2006.
