Engagement Party chronicles a four-year program at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, presenting new projects by Southern California-based artist collectives and collaborators working in the field of social practice. The Museum’s aim was to challenge the convention of the museum as a collecting institution by providing a platform for the creation of socially based works, and Engagement Party is the first museum catalogue to explicitly address the issue of social practice. Lynda Benglis

THE THING Quarterly was an artist-run publication in the form of art objects.  It’s like a magazine, except that each issue is conceived of by a different contributor and published as a useful art object. They worked with artists, writers, filmmakers, designers, and musicians to create issues and projects that ask us to rethink our relationship to objects.
This issue is a collaboration between curator and writer Raimundas Malašauskas, fashion and theater costume designer Sandra Straukaitė, and artist Elena Narbutaitė. All three were born in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The issue is made from printed cotton fabric which was produced using images taken from a journal Raimundas Malašauskas dropped into water and gave to Elena Narbutaitė. The fabric was then sewn into a collar designed by Sandra Straukaitė. The object itself is the result of a conversation between these three. It is intended to be worn.
Included with the issue is an accounting of some of the conversations that went into the production of the collar, these conversations will both shed light on and complicate your understanding of it.

This catalogue accompanied the exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: Combines, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, May – September 2006.
Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1925. After studying in Paris on the G.I. Bill in his twenties, he returned to the U.S., pausing only to investigate the Black Mountain College art scene before taking on--and swiftly conquering--New York. He had his first solo show at Leo Castelli Gallery in his early thirties, and quickly went on to become one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Rauschenberg is represented in every major museum collection, and many retrospective exhibitions of his work have toured the globe--including a thematic one at the Guggenheim Museum in 1997. In 1970, he moved to Captiva Island, off the Gulf Coast of Florida, where he still lives and works.

Robert Rauschenberg: Combines (softcover)

This catalogue focuses on work produced by the Chilean-born artist Roberto Sebastian Matta from 1939-1948 when he lived in exile in New York. Matta, who has spent most of his life living and working in Europe, occupies a unique and pivotal place in the history of American art of this period. Of all the surrealists in exile in New York during these years, Matta formed the closest links with American artists of his own generation and served as a catalytic force in communicating ideas about surrealist processes and relating to the development of a new language of abstract painting. Matta in America includes full-color illustrations of approximately twenty paintings and twenty drawings made during the artist's American sojourn. An essay tracing the development in the 1940s of Matta's work and highlighting his interactions with other artists of the period is complemented by an essay by art historian William Rubin. Originally written for the Centre Georges Pompidous's 1985 Matta monograph, Rubin's essential text, "Matta in the United States: A Personal Note," has never before been published in English.

The renowned photographer Catherine Opie takes on a challenging documentary project-- an "indirect portrait" of Elizabeth Taylor through her home and possessions. One of America's most celebrated living photographers, Catherine Opie works in series that are remarkably varied in both style and subject matter--from intimate portraits of the LGBTQ community to beautiful, nearly abstract landscapes featuring ice-fishing houses. Expanding that astonishing range of subjects further is Opie's ambitious recent series of photographs taken at the home of late movie star Elizabeth Taylor. Though glamour and celebrity are not common themes in her work, Opie was inspired by the possibilities this project offered--recalling William Eggleston's series on Elvis Presley's Graceland, or her own photographs of Obama's 2008 inauguration, both of which represent indirect portraits of their subjects. The images in this moving collection were culled from photos Opie took over the course of six months, both on the grounds of and inside Taylor's home. The subjects are wildly diverse--a dog-eared remote control manual, close-ups of Taylor's enormous closets, shelves of tchotchkes and priceless works of art--telling more about Taylor's life than any "celebrity" portrait ever could. Through Opie's thoughtful curation, Taylor's home tells a poignant story and reveals the arc of a fascinating life.

Gordon Matta-Clark: You Are the Measure was a full-scale retrospective of one of the key figures to emerge in the generation of artists that followed minimalism. During the brief but highly productive ten years that he worked as an artist, and even more so since his death at the age of 35, Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–78) has exerted a powerful fascination on artists and architects who know his work. The son of surrealist painter Roberto Echaurren Matta, Matta-Clark produced a body of work that incorporated spatial, social, and psychological experiences. Best known for the variety of his often spectacular, planned architectural interventions, Matta-Clark’s works transformed everyday experiences into extraordinary visual encounters. Among the major works featured in the exhibition are sculptures made from his acclaimed architectural building cuts, as well as drawings, films, photographs, and notebooks. A wealth of documentary material related to his interactions with architecture and space, community events, and collective activity is also shown.

Breaking The Rules: What Is Contemporary Art?

Sturtevant: Double Trouble is the first comprehensive survey in America of Sturtevant's (American, b. 1924, d. 2014) 50-year career and the only institutional presentation of her work organized in the United States since 1973. Sturtevant has been "repeating" the works of her contemporaries since 1964, using some of the most iconic artworks of her generation as a source and catalyst for the exploration of originality, authorship, and the interior structures of art and image culture. Beginning with her versions of works by Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Sturtevant initially turned the visual logic of Pop art back on itself, probing uncomfortably at the workings of art history in real time. Her chameleon-like embrace of other artists' art has also resulted in her being largely overlooked in the history of postwar American art. As a woman "repeating" the work of better-known male artists, she has passed almost unnoticed through the hierarchies of mid-century modernism and postmodernism.

Elaine Sturtevant Poster: Double Trouble

West Coast artist Eric Wesley was born in 1973 in Los Angeles. His work, which can take the form of sculpture, painting, drawing, architectural model or public artwork proposal, often uses decrepit materials and conveys a humorous take on the world and his own identity within it. For the 2004 Whitney Biennial, he created scale sets for a faux reality show; his 2000 kinetic sculpture "Kicking Ass" was a mechanized donkey that kicked holes in the gallery wall behind it. This small monograph is the first publication dedicated solely to the artist's work, and is published on the occasion of his 2006 exhibition as part of the MOCA Focus series.
