The Plume Collection is inspired by the train of the peacock These majestic birds, with their kaleidoscopic plumes, are often represented in the mythology and folk stories of cultures around the world Known as the bird with 100 eyes, the pulchritude of the peacock is often taken as a symbol of renewal, immortality, or the all-seeing omniscience of God. “The peacock is a powerful totem. The plumes feel infinitely complex, almost surreal, yet somehow still organic and corporal. During monsoon season, in India, peacocks are regular visitors to the gardens outside my home. The plumes never cease to capture my eye, or my soul, feeling at once infinitely complex, yet perfectly natural.” ~ M.

"My emotional response to water is very strong - heightened by the extreme sensations surrounding the smell, sound, sight, and touch of the aquatic world itself. There is a universe in, under, and around the water which has its own visual vocabulary."

Botanical Leaf Gold Easel Frame

The Butterfly Ginkgo Collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of Indian craft and capture the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work.
"The first time I saw this tree, it literally looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies...as if they would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye."

"I'm fascinated by the change that this seemingly simple little fruit undergoes in its lifecycle. Although I love the taste of them, what really captures my attention is the casting that is often called a Chinese lantern. I also have a nostalgic association with them. Once a year there is a harvest of cape gooseberries in North India and the streets are full of pushcarts stacked high with bundles of them. It's a joyful image that inspires a sense of hope and enthusiasm." ~M.

"The dark, midnight color of the calla lily flower reminds me of how truly mysterious nature can be. It has a magical feeling that only darkness can create. The purplish black color I achieved is a combination of the calmest of blues with the fiercest energetic red I could find."

A symmetry is created that is calming and classical. "I often explore materials and create collections which are craft based. Twist was created while experimenting with intertwining wires. There is a fluidity and movement to the twists that I love. The twisted wires suggest a coming together of things that I find poetic."
