Poetic hand sculpted stoneware bowl with cobalt stained clay. A decorative piece with an organic texture and exquisitely refined vessel walls crafted by Mélina Schoenborn through the coiling technique. This bowl was subsequently refined with a potter’s rib and scraper, to shave away the walls and make them impressively thin. Melina chooses to leave her finished works bare, without glaze, to celebrate the purity of material and form.

Mélina Schoenborn studied art history and visual arts at the Université de Montréal, before pursuing a career in ceramics, training with Marie A. Côté and Virginie Besengez, and apprenticed to Komol Kongcharoen in Thailand. Mélina’s works are made from porcelain or sandstone and she enjoys exploring the possibilities and limitations of the materials.

"Traditions learned during a childhood spent in Greece - collecting pebbles on the beaches of the idyllic Cycladic island of Naxos, lighting candles with my grandparents in churches decked with gold and precious icons, gazing at displays of ancient gold jewellery on museum visits to Athens - are an enduring influence on my work

After studying Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, I found my focus drawn to metalwork, welding and forging. I travelled throughout South and Central America heading for Taxco, the centre of silversmithing in Mexico. I studied the craft there, before moving to west London where I have had a jewellery studio for the past 30 years.

I handcraft in 18 karat gold and m y jewellery is made to be worn everyday. My hope is that the warmth and healing properties of the gold and stones that I use become part of an individual's story. The nature of the way I work makes every piece unique. I have recently begun making my own chains. Each one takes many hours to make, but I love the meditative process of soldering each individual link and allowing little pools of gold solder to form and become part of the design. These chains are delicate and organic yet enduringly strong - the ideal starting point on which to suspend a collection of treasures, beautiful stones and charms."

Grey porcelain oil lamp, hand thrown by Korean ceramicist Jae Jun Lee, with delicate signature emboss detail. Working with porcelain with zirconium silicate and polishing parts of the work without a glaze, Jae Jun creates a distinction between the two whites, highlighting the well-balanced forms and their perfect finishes.

Stoneware 2021

Tall and slender jug hand-built by Alessandra Taccia. Alessandra’s exploration of space and composition, especially negative space, has been translated from painting to ceramics. Her interest in still-life and domestic objects demonstrates her desire to find the sublime in everyday life.
The majority of Alessandra’s ceramics originate as pinch pots which are then developed through a coiling process. The muted hues and matt surfaces are achieved by applying dry glazes or simply leaving the exterior unglazed. Alessandra’s works are both functional and sculptural and can be used everyday, elevating the experience of daily rituals.

Alessandra Taccia is an Italian artist and self-taught ceramist working and living in Cambridge. She studied Fine Art at Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, Genova and takes inspiration from ancient artifacts from the Mediterranean area and the Far East, as well as Zen philosophy and Theosophy.
Alessandra uses a muted and res trained palette in her ceramics and paintings, hues and tones which are drawn from memories of familiar natural and urban landscapes. Alessandra’s restrained approach results in the concise expression of ideas.

Hannah Tounsend studied Ceramics and Glass at De Montfort University for a BA Hons, before going on to achieve Distinction in her MA of Fine Art. She combines ceramics and printmaking to create collections of sensitively realised vessel forms and subtly layered monoprints that explore the layered landscapes and weatherworn surfaces of the British coastline.

Their different artistic backgrounds, in Fine Art and Textiles respectively, inform a practice that is simultaneously sculpture and craft. Martin and Dowling’s vessel-sculptures, which explore dimensionality and vary significantly in size and shape, are made with traditional hand-tool techniques. Meticulous and repeated carving, in a manner similar to drawing, results in the textured and patterned surfaces which celebrate their making-process.
First exhibiting together in 2002, Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling have since participated in numerous exhibitions, and their work is represented in many prestigious collections across the world, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, USA, Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
