Adam+Harborth is a Berlin-based design consultancy with a roster of international clients. Such a pedigree might suggest a certain seriousness, but the designers also put high value on the power of fun and exploration. This clever spin on a music box is made by a small, family run workshop in Germany's famous Black Forest. An 18-note musical movement is inserted into solid blocks of indigenous woods, which are then trimmed by hand into a perfect ball shape by master wood turners. Manual sanding, polishing, and waxing give each ball a silky finish. Wind the key to bring the musical movement inside to life: Mozart's famous composition "The Marriage of Figaro".

LA-based architecture firm Marmol Radziner has demonstrated their skills in projects ranging from chic and minimalist prefab housing to the careful restoration of Richard Neutra's famed Kaufmann House in Palm Springs. Their new jewelry collection is modern design rendered on a smaller scale, yet it's no less striking and elegant. Born out of their experience with designing and making fittings and fixtures for their buildings, their unisex jewelry is boldly modern and elemental. One of the world’s oldest pharmacies, Santa Maria Novella was founded in 1221 in Florence by the Dominican Friars who started making herbal remedies and potions to use in the monastery. Their reputation became world renowned and the pharmacy, sponsored by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, opened to the public in 1612. Today Santa Maria Novella still produces all its products in the Florentine region, where each batch is handmade and supervised according to age old recipes and artisan methods.
Produced in the Via Reginaldo Giuliani facility in Florence with high quality raw materials, this hand made candle has Santa Maria Novella's Tabacco Toscano fragrance. The fragrance combines the woody notes of Tuscan tobacco leaves, with notes of light vanilla and burnt malt, for a warm and enveloping effect. Dietrich Lubs, along with Dieter Rams, was responsible for establishing Braun as a benchmark design company from the 50s through the 90s. Braun's decision to re-issue it's clock collection met with the approval of Lubs, who credits the clocks functionally oriented designs for their continued relevance. The current clocks are based on the original designs with slight modifications that bring them into the 21st century.

Creating designs inspired by her childhood spent in Japan, Mizuki Tsurutaka apprenticed with an expert fine jeweler in Los Angeles before establishing her own line there under the name of Black Barc. Her personal heritage is reflected in her use of the traditional Japanese techniques of mokumegane and kiribame. The radiometer is an instructive object which demonstrates the scientific theory of converting natural light into energy. Powered only by light itself, it will spin slowly in low light conditions, furiously in direct sunlight or well-lit rooms up to 2,000 revolutions per minute. It remains unresponsive to LED or fluorescent light. Science lesson aside, this blown glass radiometer functions as an engaging and sculptural object in its own right. Made in Germany.

A lot of picture frames overpower the very images they are intended to highlight. These acrylic frames take the opposite approach by displaying cherished photos in the most unobtrusive way possible. The inset magnets hold the crystal clear acrylic panels together -- use photos that extend edge to edge or use smaller sizes to create a floating effect. We were fortunate for the opportunity to visit Iwachu Ironworks, located in northern Japan's Morioka City, the historical center of the craft of nambu-tekki (cast iron). Finished with a special lacquer known as urushi, this trivet stood out for its elegant simplicity—a hallmark of Japanese design. Each piece is cast by hand by skilled craftsmen who spend years refining their technique. The molds can only be used for a limited period of time before they break down and must be created again—by hand of course. Too attractive to hide away in the cupboard, it looks great on the counter or tabletop when not in use.
