Joseph Opinel began his knifemaking career in 1895 in the Savoie region of the French Alps. The local population of shepherds, farmers, and artisans were the first to put the knives to the test but by the 1940s more than 200 million had been sold, each knife featuring the brand mark which depicts the hand of St. John the Baptist and the crown of the Savoie Dukedom. This specialized version is for mushroom hunting. The 3" curved blade cuts stems with ease and features a serrated section to scrape off larger bits of debris, while the natural bristle brush finishes the cleaning job. Happy hunting.

Jikatabi is a type of traditional rubber-soled worker’s footwear worn in Japan. The design is more reflective of the anatomical structure of the human foot rather than stylistic concerns, yet through this approach they achieve their own highly distinctive aesthetic. Tokujiro Ishibashi, the brother of the founder of the Bridgestone Tire Corporation, is widely credited with their invention. These high-quality versions are made by the Moonstar Company, who has been producing rubber soled shoes in Kurume, Japan, since 1873. Canvas uppers, traditional tab and loop closure. Designed in 1959 and still hand turned in a small village in Denmark, each solid oak bird features a body and free-moving head that can be balanced to create various expressions while the body can be turned upside down to change the body shape.

Each call comes packaged in its own wooden box with sliding top. Birding is one of the fastest growing outdoor hobbies and no wonder—what other language can be learned as easily? Established in 1875 in Kyoto, Kaikado is a small, family run company that has been producing chazutsu (tea canisters) by hand since their inception. Elegantly functional, each cylindrical canister is produced in a process that involves anywhere between 130 to 140 steps. The canister are available in natural brass or copper and are intentionally left unlacquered. Over time and with use, the finishes will darken to a rich patina that is unique to each piece. Now, coffee canisters join the Kaikado tradition. The airtight design, complete with inner lid, maintains the freshness of fine coffee. Each coffee canister comes with a handmade brass scoop. A very special item to use and enjoy every day, each canister is hand stamped with the Kaikado emblem.

Sanzo Wada (1883-1967) was an artist, teacher, costume and kimono designer during a turbulent time in avant-garde Japanese art and cinema. Wada was ahead of his time in developing traditional and Western influenced color combinations, helping to lay the foundations for contemporary color research. Based on his original 6-volume work from the 1930s, Volume 1 offers 348 color combinations, as attractive and sensuous as the book’s own design. Following on that enduring bestseller, 'A Dictionary of Color Combinations' Vol. 2 brings back two more works by Wada published in 1935–1936 and 1938, respectively. The book presents 72 colour patterns themed on the Japanese seasons and another 165 drawn from early to mid-twentieth-century fashion, interior, and graphic design, making it an indispensable reference for designers, fashion and interior specialists, illustrators, photographers, writers, and indeed anyone engaged in creative work.

We worked with Portland designer Adam Arnold on this decidedly modern kitchen apron that employs traditional Japanese-style criss cross construction rather than the more common and often uncomfortable neck loop and string ties. Made from sturdy but lightweight smooth cotton twill, it has a clean tailored form that keeps it from billowing about or drooping into your work area. Locally hand sewn, the apron has unisex styling with a contrasting trim detail and a generous double front pocket. One size fits most. Machine wash cold, hang to dry, press as needed.

Salt is the world’s most widely used food ingredient and having a proper place to store it in the kitchen is a must for good cooks everywhere. Joshua McFadden, chef and owner of renowned trattoria Ava Gene’s in Portland, Oregon, is a vegetable whisperer. In product design circles, the “Braun Style” is typified by crisp geometry and no-nonsense functionality—overall a rather, well, German approach. Dietrich Lubs, along with Dieter Rams was responsible for establishing Braun as a benchmark design company from the 50s through the 90s. Braun’s decision to re-issue its clock collection met with the approval of Lubs, who credits the clocks’ functionally-oriented designs for their continued relevance about 30 years after their initial introduction. The current clocks are based on the original designs with slight modifications, bringing them into the 21st Century. Plastic housing, quartz movement, silent sweep hand, runs on two AA batteries (not included).

Parkhaus is a Berlin-based company that manufactures their products exclusively in high-quality pure wool felt. Felt is the oldest fabric known to mankind, predating both weaving and knitting. In Turkey, felt remains have been found that can be dated back to at least 6,500 BC. Parkhaus takes felt traditions in a decidedly modern direction. Each piece is precision cut. The wool construction is naturally dirt and moisture resistant. These coasters add a warm, textural note to any table or surface. Regular cleaning can be done by blotting with a damp sponge. To deep clean, they  can be dry-cleaned or handwashed in cold water with mild soap, laid flat to dry.
