The cultivation and extraction of natural indigo has been rooted in India for over 4,000 years. The technique of extracting indigo blue, historically considered the rarest and most regal color, was a closely guarded family secret, passed down from generation to generation. Through a careful process, indigo can produce a vast palette of blue hues, from the palest sky to the deepest midnight. Dye vats alone take a full week to prepare and require daily stirring. The un-dyed cloth is pinched, sewn, and tied according to precise patterns. Once dye is applied to the material, the ties are removed, revealing patterns of lines, shells, dots, or tracery. Our artisans in western India continue the ancient tradition of indigo dyeing by hand.

Handcrafted for a home which boasts character, Soil to Studio's linen collection is bold and vibrant, makes a statement and is a beautiful amalgamation of craft and design. Inspired from the vibrant colors worn by the local communities in Thar desert, the collection represents ‘The Great Indian’ desert. The colors signify their culture, identity and way of living.

Soil to Studio uses time-honored techniques like handloom weaving, block-printing, natural dyeing, and hand embroidering to slow make table linens, pillows, wall art, rugs, and scarves in intentional, small batches. Each piece is made by artisans in rural villages and communities in India from natural fibers like wool, organic cotton, Indian linen, and silk. Founder Swati Bansal was born and raised in the small town of Udaipur in Rajasthan, India, where her upbringing fostered a strong appreciation for slow made textiles and handmade techniques. Soil to Studio’s mission is to empower artisans and their families, preserve local craftsmanship techniques, and to create sustainable livelihoods for their artisans. Soil to Studio follows fair trade practices and asks artisans to set their own prices for the pieces they make.
