Though Uzbek stitched, the motif presented here is Turkish - a tree of life. Suzani tree of life designs represent three spheres: the roots spring from the underworld, the trunk rises through the terrestrial world, and the branches reach the heavens. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry, as the fruit designs are symbolic of fertility. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.

This St. Frank archival print depicts a handwoven piece made from pure Tibetan sheep's wool to produce a fabric called Sherma. Sherma is one of the finest woven textiles made in Tibet. This super-thin wool takes much longer to spin than other, thicker wools, and is one of the thinnest wools that can be created on a loom. After spinning, this wool is dyed using natural plant-based dyes and then woven into strips. The strips are stitched together to form the traditional Tibetan apron called pangden. These aprons are characterized by a three panel, multi-colored stripe design.
The pangden communicates two aspects of a Tibetan woman's identity. Traditionally, only married women wore aprons, so the apron generally serves as a mark of marital status. Second, the stripe patterns and colors are unique to different regions of Tibet, thus revealing the woman's origin. This pangden is from the Panam County of the Shegatse Region in the southwestern part of Tibet.

This piece is handmade from black clay, or barro negro, from the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. The black color is the result of a natural oxidation process, free of chemicals, lead, or glaze. The use of Oaxacan black clay to produce pottery dates back to Zapotec times, when it featured a matte grey finish. In the 1950’s, a potter of Zapotec ancestry developed the beautiful patina seen today by burnishing the pottery before putting it in the kiln. This St. Frank piece has been fired at a high temperature, a technique used in the Oaxacan valley for centuries to reduce porousness and increase durability in Mezcal and water containers.

Each region producing kilims employs its own distinctive patterns and colors in the rug design. The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a holiday held throughout Mexico on All Saints' Day that combines Aztec and Spanish Catholic traditions. This day is a fantastic celebration of the lives of deceased ancestors and friends, filled with food, singing, dancing, and games. The deceased are believed to awaken to share in the festivities. Traditionally, families decorate tombs and build altars, or ofrendas, as an offering to the dead. The altars are piled with cempasúchil (marigolds known as the flower of the dead), candles, the deceased's favorite foods, and skulls made of candy or clay. This intricate handmade embroidery was developed by indigenous Otomí people in central Mexico. The Otomí faced an economic crisis in the 1960s caused by severe drought in their predominantly subsistence farming region. As an alternative source of income, Otomí women popularized this embroidery through the revival of an ancestral technique.
Today, skilled Otomí textile artists are in demand outside of their local communities as appreciation for this vibrant embroidery has traveled well beyond its humble origins. In recent years, Otomí embroidery has become an iconic textile print, appearing in the work of top interior and fashion designers. Even the cult French fashion house, Hermès, collaborated with Otomí artists to release an exclusive line of Hermès scarves featuring the distinctive designs.
The symbolism and iconography in this textile design reflect time-honored traditions and beliefs of harmony with nature. The whimsical flora and fauna embroidered motifs can be traced back to pre-Aztec Mesoamerica and are said to originate from cave paintings. Textile designers draw the animals and plants from memories, dreams, and mythical imagination; the forms are then embroidered. Each character bears significance. The Juju hat is a symbol of prosperity and divinity in Bamileke culture. The Bamileke is an ethnic group from Cameroon's west and northeast provinces. Birds, whose feathers are used to create this elaborate headdress, are sacred to the Bamileke because their power of flight allows them to soar to the heavens. Traditionally, the Juju hat was worn by members of the high Kuosi class during Bamileke rituals and festivities. The Kuosi consisted of prominent tribal leaders, affluent landowners, and celebrated warriors. The Juju hat was worn to perform an annual dance celebrating the kingdom's prosperity.

Provenance

Johanna Bramble's work combines a modern aesthetic with traditional textile weaving. The artist, a Senegalese designer, is passionate about preserving time-honored weaving methods. She has a strong contemporary curiosity, leading her to incorporate new materials into her creations. This allows her to work through heritage textiles to reveal new insights.
Bramble believes weaving is a universal language. Here, her work is exhibited inside out to reveal the process of making. The Senegalese weaving technique Bramble employs is rare today - shared with few other countries in the world. It requires two people and meticulous execution. One weaver, the apprenti, assists the other. Coordination between the two allows for the creation of elaborate patterns, such as the hexagon motifs on this piece. This approach is the precursor for mechanized Jacquard weaving that is common today.
Woven textiles, or serru rabal in the Wolof language, are the most cared for objects in a Senegalese home. They are treasured by women who dress their fabrics with incense. These textiles, loaded with symbolic meaning, are presented at specific moments in life, from birth to death. Even today, serru rabal are used as a shield against evil. Bramble's contemporary pattern displays the hexagon - a symbol of wisdom, life, and health present in Islamic, Christian, and Judaic history. Bramble created both the positive and negative versions of this symbol to reinforce the idea of unity and complementarity, much like the concept of yin-yang in Eastern thought.

This catchall is created from fabric inspired by Kuba cloth, a unique Congolese textile featuring complex designs that are created when various geometric raffia pieces are stitched to a plain raffia background. The resulting rough surface is punctuated by repeated geometric patterns with unexpected interruptions in design. Men cultivate the raffia palm and weave the raffia cloth; women then create the patterned textiles. Traditionally, Kuba cloth was used as a wrapped skirt worn during burials. Later, it was incorporated in ceremonial dress for ritual dances and other celebrations.

Kantha is a native household craft originating from women in rural Bengal. The word kantha refers to a running stitch. Classic Kantha textiles are characterized by this stitch, which is often used to produce motifs such as flowers, birds, animals, and other folk scenes from everyday activities. Ka ntha is traditionally used to create men's and women's garments, such as dhotis and saris. In addition to garments, several layers of cloth can be embroidered together to create quilts and coverings for mirrors, boxes, pillows, and other decorative objects. Alpaca herds are bred specifically for their fiber, woven into the signature Peruvian textile. Baby alpaca fiber is especially luxurious, soft, and beautiful. This throw was handcrafted in Peru from 100% Peruvian baby alpaca. The alpaca is sheared, leaving the animal unharmed and handled ethically.
This 100% baby alpaca woven throw is 60" x 90", with an additional inch on each end of the length for the delicate eyelash fringe. The piece is adorned with our signature gold St. Frank plate. Dry clean only.
