Description

Minimalism was never so crystal clear. Mouth-blown glass with a polished edge form the clear lampshade of this classic re-imagined by lighting designer Sofie Refer. Whether on her own or under her studio Refer + Staer, the Danish lighting designer continually plays with the concept of "clear." There's even 7.5 feet of transparent cord that can be trimmed to suit. The high grade of the glass is paired with a fine porcelain socket and stainless-steel accents. A white, low-profile canopy blends into most ceilings. The Mega-Bulb is a bulbous version of the original that uses a G40 clear incandescent bulb (not included). When the Bulb came out, it quickly took several accolades including the coveted Good Design Award in 2001—two years before Sofie graduated from the Danish Design School. The gal knows her lighting. The Flutes Dorian Pendant

Description

The "fingers" of the geometric polyhedron structure of this lamp are reminiscent of the coral reefs David Trubridge explores off the coast of New Zealand. A love for earth drove the construction, flatpacked to reduce freight and packing resources. Identical pieces make home assembly a snap. The celebrated designing craftsman ended up in his adopted home after he, his wife and their two sons sold everything and set off on a yacht for a world adventure. It culminated in 1985 when they decided to remain there. While an artist-in-residence at Hawkes Bay Polytechnic (now EIT), he built a house and suddenly found himself with further commissions. Before realizing homes, lamps and furniture, David left Newcastle University in 1972 with a degree in Naval architecture. His work has appeared in countless museums, including the Victoria & Albert and the Pompidou Centre. That barely scratches the surface of his fascinating story and work ethos.

Appearing almost to float in space, the Cross Pendant Light pares an iconic form down to its linear essentials to create intersecting streams of gently glowing illumination. Two opposing aluminum channels intersect, to propel warm LED light through a recessed poly prismatic diffuser. With no extraneous details, it's available in a minimalist's choice of either white and black powdercoat finish. From Resident, the New Zealand-based contemporary design and manufacturing company just established in 2011, and already lauded for its authentic blend of craft, engineering and innovation.
