Inspired by photographs of couples kissing - snapped by the likes of Ed Templeton and Weegee - the artist Dana Veraldi initially began a series of gestural line drawings as an experimentation for larger works. As she grew to love their simplicity, these studies evolved into stand alone works.

Lacquered iron sculpture | 2019
A tribute to movement as a symbol of life, Alimbau’s new works are sculptural revisions of drawings made in air. Alternative to her depiction of the female form on paper and canvas using the minimum possible lines, these sculptures acquire freedom and volume in their more imaginative process. While light and delicate in appearance, this series is hand welded in solid iron and painted with a resistant lacquer allowing for placement both indoors and outdoors.

Made in collaboration with c eramicist Romy Northover, The Fire Bowls are the latest in Beletic's ‘Reflections on Artifacts’, a broad sculptural project initially intended as creating works based on primitive methods, philosophies, technologies and artifacts.
“There are so many ways of knowing and we are left only remnants,” says Beletic. “The series is intended to be in dialogue with the strong connection that runs through the endeavors of human beings and the many ways of knowing.” These new works mark a development in concept, departing from tradition and form, creating new works based on bringing these ancestral inspirations into the modern age. The Fire Bowls are intended as ceremonial objects for the purposes of holding small ceremonial fires.

A Reason

In these works, the form within the composition is intercepted by planes and lines that both construct the impression of an actual space and simultaneously eradicate that impression. Made both in LA and Virginia, Gabrielle meditates on the act of being “away” or “at home”, how the absence or presence of a ground suggests a fluctuating scale for the architectural elements found in her stitched works.
“I imagine that when I am home, I have a fixed shape and proportion in regard to my surroundings, and when I am away my scale fluctuates in relation to the place. I am seeking my shape, navigating my edges.”
While unsettling, there is a freedom.

White Sculptures

DESCRIPTION
Archival ink on museum-quality cotton rag paper | 2016
Photographer and director, Gia Coppola’s most recent body of work, was inspired in part by the saturated cinematography of Robert Altman’s film, 3 Women. The 1977 movie’s muted Californian landscape served as a visual reference when scouting for the right backdrop to showcase Gucci’s 2016 womenswear collection, designed by Alessandro Michele. As Coppola describes, “On location, we found some similarities between the film and the fashion. Altman’s storytelling wasn’t linear and existed in a grey area between the real and the unreal. The same can be said of Michele’s Gucci shows, which blur the lines between male and female, contemporary and vintage. Both of these creatures hark into our memories to make us realize how we feel in the moment.”

While in residency with Tappan, Veraldi drew a series of portraits of her favorite legendary figures spanning a wide range of cultural references. In her phases of research she sifted through photo and video archives of each figure, in attempt to capture a more rounded portrait. “The research helps me to try to capture the soul of the person I am drawing, through simple yet purposeful lines and texture.” This is the first time Veraldi is selling her portraits (an iconic signature of the artist) as original works on paper.

This new series of works on paper is closely tied to Rives Granade’s larger oil paintings, which are oftentimes iterations of these initial studies. This particular suite of paintings plays with pop imagery both created by the artist and sourced from various media.
“The works seek to integrate disparate imagery into a homogenous composition referencing everything from neo-graphic design to asian television, yet their legacy ultimately lies in relationship to surrealism. The colors are keyed high (almost neon) in order to emphasize the artificial nature of the imagery. It is my intention that these paintings be totally familiar and at the same time completely unrecognizable.”

Concrete, 24k gold leaf, hardware | 2017
The Concretions series came about by thinking about what Arnold could do with the plastic bags and bubble wrap that accumulate in her house and studio, along with excess wet concrete from other pieces. The impetus is an attempt to transform ubiquitous materials into something new, both the bag as a mold and the concrete as material. The plastic creates a smooth, sometimes glossy surface (depending on the plastic) and pillowy folds and dents that seem to tempt viewers to want to experience the pieces tactilely. The application of the 24K gold leaf or gold spray paint further pushes the aesthetic qualities of concrete through the contrast of materials.

Graphite on paper | 2017 Drawn during Martinet + Texereau’s time in Los Angeles through the Tappan Exchange program, these works were inspired by the duo’s exploration of California’s suburbs and architecture. Through the eyes of newcomers hunting for unexpected beauty, domestic scenes are transformed from banal to extraordinary.

In this new body of work, Teschner returns to Key West, drawing on both the language of wood joinery and the extensive palette of a lush tropical landscape. Within these stitched sculptures, the scale fluctuates from board to building. In her words ,“A house itself grows from seed”. "I paid a lot of attention to the balance between growing plants and the build environment. The way that the leaves of a palm would exceed the width of an entire home, and how this atypical ratio struck me as more suitable to living. The wild growth built additional volumes onto the layout of neighborhoods, and borders between properties became as indistinct as the shape of the shoreline surrounding the island.”

In this piece I cut up watercolors I did in South Africa and collaged them into a scene reminiscent of both the White House and a plantation. I was thinking of it as a symbolic act of stealing what was made in Africa, then destroyed, displaced, and dispersed into America.
