Photographer and director, Gia Coppola’s most recent body of work, was inspired in part by the saturated cinematography of Robert Altman’s film, 3 Women. The 1977 movie’s muted Californian landscape served as a visual reference when scouting for the right backdrop to showcase Gucci’s 2016 womenswear collection, designed by Alessandro Michele. As Coppola describes, “On location, we found some similarities between the film and the fashion. Altman’s storytelling wasn’t linear and existed in a grey area between the real and the unreal. The same can be said of Michele’s Gucci shows, which blur the lines between male and female, contemporary and vintage. Both of these creatures hark into our memories to make us realize how we feel in the moment.”

"The direction I had been given was to contribute, in any fashion that I’d like, on the idea of what “blind for love” means to me. I sat with it for a while not really sure what to do. I had just watched the Truman Show and was on a Peter Weir kick, my room-mate came home and asked me if I’d ever seen Picnic at Hanging Rock— I hadn’t. When I put it on, I was flabbergasted and totally inspired. It’s a very provocative and sexually charged film but also has so much underlying truth. It felt it related intuitively to all many facets and innuendos of  the concept “blind for love”. When I told Alessandro my idea he said “You know it’s one of my favorite movies?” Apparently, in every collection he does a piece that attributes the film. When the clothes came, it was funny karma how well that collection in particular worked towards our narrative."

Made in collaboration with c eramicist Romy Northover, The Fire Bowls are the latest in Beletic's ‘Reflections on Artifacts’, a broad sculptural project initially intended as creating works based on primitive methods, philosophies, technologies and artifacts. “There are so many ways of knowing and we are left only remnants,” says Beletic. “The series is intended to be in dialogue with the strong connection that runs through the endeavors of human beings and the many ways of knowing.” These new works mark a development in concept, departing from tradition and form, creating new works based on bringing these ancestral inspirations into the modern age. The Fire Bowls are intended as ceremonial objects for the purposes of holding small ceremonial fires.

"Each painting I do is an experiment, an investigation into the nature of an image and how it functions. I am interested in what’s behind the image, how the image is constructed, how it is read, etc. My work tends to be photo based, because the photograph still is thought of as a document of reality. Painting the image helps me deconstruct and understand it."

This sculpture was created alongside a series of paintings for Association USA’s instore publication. "This sculpture, unlike my others, has a more "rough" aspect," explains Tagada. The modular sculptures are derived directly from her paintings and the idea of "play."

On location, we found some similarities between the film and the fashion. Altman’s storytelling wasn’t linear and existed in a grey area between the real and the unreal. The same can be said of Michele’s Gucci shows, which blur the lines between male and female, contemporary and vintage. Both of these creatures hark into our memories to make us realize how we feel in the moment.
