The Olema bucket hat has a topstitched brim with reinforcement that helps to keep it in shape. The hat is made of cotton with the orange, pink, and dark green Pieni Unikko pattern, which is printed in Helsinki. Marimekko’s famous poppy pattern Unikko was born in 1964 in a time when the design house’s collections featured mostly abstract prints. Handmade in Mexico, this matte wine red anodized aluminum large tumbler is at home in the kitchen or outdoors, and provides a nice punch of color on the tabletop. We find these tumblers so satisfying in hand and lip feel. Also, the sound of an iced drink clinking in these tumblers eternally pleasing.
It reminds us at Placewares of meals at Kevin's grandparents' farm. The grandkids were always served their drinks in these tumblers. And, they went with us outside as well so with nineteen grandchildren they developed a lovely patina over the years.

Nanna Ditzel

In 1946, at the astonishingly young age of 23, Nanna Ditzel graduated from the prestigious Design School of Copenhagen with a degree in furniture design. Her prior background as a cabinet maker provided her with a basic understanding of the elemental pillars of design, from the fundamental processes of its handcraft to the use of natural materials. Ditzel took it a step further and developed her own identity and style. Her designs were both experimental and innovative, so much so that several of her designs were rediscovered decades later. A timeless example of her forward-thinking design aesthetic is the Rana chair, honored with the 2013 Interior Innovation Award in Cologne. Ditzel rebuffed traditional design concepts and managed to successfully build her own, unique style consisting of organic, soft, and feminine lines.

The Sievoinen tunic is made of a firm cotton twill blend in the Pieni Unikko (poppy) pattern. The loose-fitting tunic has wide binding at the neckline and long sleeves that are dropped at the shoulders. Unikko (poppy), symbolizing creativity, was born in a time when hardly any floral designs were included in Marimekko’s collections. Maija Isola, however, was fascinated by the theme of flowers and decided to create an entire range of novel floral prints.

Arne Jacobsen

As a little boy, Arne Jacobsen dreamed of being a professional painter. His career trajectory took a slight change of course when he enrolled in the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Fortuitous indeed, as Jacobsen is known as the “the greatest Danish architect” ever. In 1925, Jacobsen, still a student, won a silver medal for his first furniture design in the Paris Art Deco Fair. The piece was a seemingly simple rattan chair named “The Paris Chair”. The design still lives on today and is regarded as one of his most iconic pieces. Jacobsen’s style was simple but effective, essential yet distinctive. Even though he strongly despised the word “designer” and never used the word to describe himself, the world remembers him as one of the best there ever was.

Mathematical Elegance

Numbered, limited edition, designed by Man Ray

The beginning of the 20th century saw increasing complexity in the study of mathematics and it heralded the use of three-dimensional models as teaching aids. One of these was the Kuen Surface, a rare example of a surface with constant negative curvature, first described by the German mathematician Alfred Enneper (1830-1885).
In 1936 Man Ray was hired by the art journal Cahiers d’Art to photograph the mathematical models of non-euclidean geometry at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris. These models went on to be exhibited alongside many surrealist and modernist works at the Grand Palais. Man Ray’s series of photographs and paintings called Shakespearean Equations contributed to liberating these forms from the isolation of scientific research and presented to the public the world of mathematical elegance.
This accurate representation of the Kuen surface is made in Germany of walnut wood, in a small production run.

Man Ray

Emmanuel Radnitzky, by far better known by his iconic pseudonym of Man Ray, was an American artist whose innovative work established him as the leading figure behind the concepts of Dada and Surrealism, as well as for the rest of the early avant-garde art. Heavily influenced by the artworks of European authors such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Radnitzky was one of the few American artists to truly be accepted as the leading source of creative ideas on the Old Continent. Among his numerous contributions to the world of art, Man Ray’s greatest achievement was the way he was able to manipulate the medium of photography by introducing the artistic potentials of different processes, such as solarization and rayographs (a special eponym for his photograms). Emmanuel Radnitzky once famously stated that he does not photograph nature, but his own visions – this was the main driving force behind all art Man Ray created.
