The Palma collection is a collaboration between Japan Creative – a nonprofit organization - and British designer Jasper Morrison who was invited to work with the Oigen foundry in Iwate, Japan.
Jasper Morrison

Jasper Morrison was born in London in 1959. He graduated in Design from Kingston Polytechnic in 1982. Then he attended the Royal College of Art for postgraduate studies, which included a year at Berlin’s HdK art school.
In the 2000s Jasper worked on a project for Rowenta to design a set of kitchen appliances, and he began consultancies with Muji, Samsung, Ideal Standard and Established & Sons. In 2006 he collaborated with Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa on the exhibition Super Normal at Axis Gallery, Tokyo. It was followed by a book and toured to London, Milan, Helsinki and New York. This exhibition inspired the opening of the Jasper Morrison Shop beside his London studio in 2008. The Shop presents an exhibition each year during London Design Festival. Since 2010 Jasper has collaborated with Spanish companies Camper, Kettal and Andreu World, and US companies Maharam and Emeco. He is art director of Swiss electronics company Punkt. In 2014 he designed the furniture for the extension to Tate Modern, more than ten years after working on the opening of the museum with the architects Herzog & de Meuron.
The Maker

The Oigen Foundry is located in an area that has been producing traditional Nambu ironware for 900 years. By casting in fine-grain sand the ironware has a renowned smooth and unblemished surface. If cared for properly Oigen ironware can last over 100 years and is made from 75% recycled material.

They come in three nesting sizes, so we quickly bought ours and brought them back home with us. Water boiled in iron kettles becomes soft and tastes good even when cooled. Iron teapots are coated with enamel on the inside to prevent rust even if water is left inside them.

The original bird and a new dragon celebrating the 30th anniversary of Michael Graves' award-winning kettle.

This celebrated kettle with the bird that sings when the water has boiled was a great success when it was introduced in 1985, and for Alessi it represented a meeting of great design and mass production methods, a combination that Michael Graves worked hard to achieve, applying his personal visual code which fused influences from Art Deco to Pop Art and even the language of cartoons.

Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Veg-tan leather is as old as civilization and still has no rival. The skins are tanned with all plant-based materials, and they take no pigment or surface paint to cover mars and blemishes. Only A-grade hides get to become veg-tan.
Patina
Products made with natural non-dyed vegetable-tanned hides age gracefully and develop a patina - turning from a light tan to a beautiful caramel color with sunlight’s UV rays and oils from hands and general use.

Kobon Square

Apart from metalworking, woodworking is the other ancient and traditional production method in the area where Alessi has its roots: the Strona valley in northern Piedmont, Italy. So as not to lose this precious link with tradition, in 1988 Alessi acquired the oldest original company in the valley, Battista Piazza 1865. A number of historic objects from the early 20th century have been reissued. Between the 1980s and 1990s, Ettore Sottsass, together with the young designers in his studio, was the main designer of the Twergi line in wood.
