Published on the occasion of the exhibition Adrián Villar Rojas: The Theater of Disappearance at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, October 22, 2017 - May 13, 2018. This catalogue explores Villar Rojas' installation practice through  renderings of institutional commissions of the past five years, documenting his uniquely twenty-first century form of artistic communication.
With this publication, we wish to share the methods by which Adrián Villar Rojas and his team of collaborators engages with the institutions that commission his projects. These disalogues almost always take the form of PDFs, diagrams, screen grabs, 3-D renderings, and images shuttled back and forth between the artist's team and the institution. These documents operate as a lingua franca for the artist's creative, diagnostic, logistical, and strategic methods of production.

Adorn your walls with Jackson Pollock's No. 1.
Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 - August 11, 1956) was an American painter. In the early 1930s he studied in New York City under Thomas Hart Benton Later he was employed on the WPA Federal Art Project. In 1945 he married the artist Lee Krasner. Two years later, after several years of semiabstract work stimulated by psychotherapy, Pollock began to lay his canvas on the floor and he would pour or drip paint onto it in stages. This process permitted him to record the force and scope of his gestures in trajectories of enamel or aluminum paint that "veiled" the figurative elements found in his earlier work. The results were huge areas covered with complex and dynamic linear patterns that fuse image and form and engulf the vision of the spectator in their scale and intricacy. Pollock believed that art derived from the unconscious and judged his work, and that of others, on its inherent authenticity of personal expression. He became known as a leading practitioner of Abstract Expressionism, particularly the form known as action painting. Championed by critic Clement Greenberg and others, he became a celebrity. When he died in a car crash at 44, he was one of the few American painters to be recognized during his lifetime and afterward as the peer of 20th-century European masters of modern art.

Virgil Abloh (b. 1980, Rockford, Illinois) is an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, and fashion designer. After earning a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he completed a Master's degree in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was here that he learned not only about design principles but also crafted the principles of his art practice. He studied a curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe, on a campus he designed. Currently, he is the Chief Creative Director and founder of Off-White™️and the Artistic Director of Menswear at Louis Vuitton.

The Pattern and Decoration movement emerged in the 1970s as an embrace of long-dismissed art forms associated with the decorative. Pioneering artists such as Miriam Schapiro (1923–2015), Joyce Kozloff (b. 1942), Robert Kushner (b. 1949), and others appropriated patterns, frequently from non-Western decorative arts, to produce intricate, often dizzying or gaudy designs in media ranging from painting, sculpture, and collage to ceramics, installation art, and performance. This dazzling book showcases an astonishing array of works by more than 40 artists from across the United States, examining the movement’s defiant adoption of art forms traditionally viewed as feminine, craft-based, or otherwise inferior to fine art. In addition to offering an overview of the Pattern and Decoration movement as it is commonly recognized, this volume considers artists of the period who are not typically associated with the movement. Created in tandem with her 2014 installation "A Subtlety" at the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, pivotal contemporary artist Kara Walker's collaboration with Bernardaud features a limited-edition porcelain pitcher made in commemoration of this monumental show. The profile adorned on the ceramic pitcher recalls the sphinx-like sculpture that stood as the centerpiece of the installation. "A Subtlety or the Marvelous Sugar Baby" ran from May to July 2014, and served as an homage to: "the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World."
