As a child, designer Astrid Sarkissian was lulled to sleep with stories of her ancestors in the silk trade. Born in Paris, she grew up to study at London's famed fashion school, Central Saint Martins, and creates exquisite, limited edition scarves, each one a spectacularly detailed work of art. ABOUT Joanne Handler

Joanne Handler’s paintings forge together lyrical gestures with vibrant colors. While Handler is a meticulous planner in her everyday life, she relinquishes control when she paints. The music she listens to while painting elicits emotions and memories that inexplicably inform her choice of color and tool. A variety of hardware store ephemera are just some of the different tools Handler uses in her work. The abstract marks made by objects as varied as brooms and flyswatters help express the sounds and rhythms that are playing while she paints. Handler continuously evolves in her choice of materials - they are not limited to acrylic, enamel, spray and Flashe paints. They are a nod to the heroic masculinity that characterized the action painting of the past. Just as Handler affects the canvas by making a mark on it, that mark, in turn, affects her and determines the trajectory of the next mark. While spontaneity is key in her work, it is always within the parameters of this dialogue.

Joanne Handler lives and works in New York and Westhampton Beach. She has studied at The Art Students League (New York, NY) and continues to study with prolific artist and mentor James Little. Handler has had two solo exhibitions at The Kaufman Arcade (New York, NY). Recently, Handler’s work has been included in group exhibitions such as The White Room Gallery’s “Zen and the Art of Women” in Bridgehampton, SITE Brooklyn’s “Color: Primary to Tertiary”, Harlem School of the Arts “Shelter 2018”, the New York Borough President’s office “City Views”, First Street Gallery “On and Off the Wall” and Arthouse “The Grow Show”. Handler has also been included in numerous exhibitions organized by The National Association of Women’s Artists, of which she is a member.

Angel Ortiz (LAII, born Manhattan, 1966) grew up on the Lower East Side. As a teenager, he met the artist Keith Haring, who showed interest in his tagging style. The two became fast friends, and sensing an artistic compatibility, they began painting together. LAII’s unique intertwining lines intermingled with Haring’s markings to create a dynamic sense of kinetic surface.
Early in their collaboration, LAII (short for ‘Little Angel’) and Haring had joint exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery (1982) and Fun Gallery (1983). For almost a decade they worked together on artistic projects, including wall murals, canvases, sculptures and other painted objects. Their collaborations are still shown in museums worldwide. Following Haring’s death (1990) LAII continued his own artistic pursuits. To this day he marks work utilizing his distinctive tag and a trademark style of inky curving squiggles.
Haring’s untimely death turned LAII’s world upside-down. Ortiz was left without his best friend and, without the personal relationships to Haring himself, he became estranged from the Haring estate and was separated from the pieces to which he had contributed. Having only received cash stipends from Haring, there was no structured payment plan for him, so he eventually found himself having to rebuild his career from the ground up. For LAII, painting million-dollar paintings with artist icons and spray-painting on New York City’s walls came naturally to him. I don’t want to be rich and famous. What keeps me going is my art, Ortiz says. He continues to live and work in the Lower East Side where he intends to spend the rest of his life. LAII is one of, if not the only, remaining pioneers of the 80s pop-culture boom to still operate from the Lower East Side.
Keith Haring on LAII Aug 24, 1982
I met LAII last summer while I was doing a mural at J.H.S. 22. I had moved back to the Lower East Side after several months of living near Times Square. I noticed his tags immediately and the more time I spent downtown the more tags I saw. They stood out from the other graffiti. I could tell that this person, whoever it was, knew something about drawing that not everybody knows. I asked other graffiti writers if they knew who LAII was. Finally, 3 months later, I met him. LAII turned out to be Little Angel Two. It seemed as if we had already known each other when we met. We hung out together sometimes, going tagging through the depth of the Lower East Side.
On one of his visits to my studio I invited him to tag on a primed yellow square I prepared. After he covered it with LAII signatures I added a few lines, ‘finishing’ it. The contrast between our lines was exciting. There is something uniquely satisfying to me in the fusion between our two styles of drawing. It is a delicate balance between the archaic and extremely modern, classical and psychedelic at the same time. We pursued our collaborations on vases, pillars, paintings and found objects. Street tags were finally placed in a context where people where forced to see them as art.

ABOUT PAUL MORRIS Paul Morris is a New York City-based artist. Morris graduated from Parson’s School of Design in 1997. Morris’s background is in publishing and advertising where he has had a hand in influencing fashion, trends and perspectives while working at major publications such as The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and George. At Grey NY, Morris created Proctor & Gamble Pantene’s campaign for the London 2012 Olympics.
In June of 2014 Morris had his first New York group art show at Fotofoam Gallery. He most recently earned the honor of being named a winner at the Art Takes Manhattan group show at the Caelum Gallery located in the Chelsea gallery district.
Currently, Morris’s interest is in the juxtaposition of photography and graphic design. Morris creates large-scale patterns by capturing and restructuring elements discovered in urban landscapes to create new perspectives of objects found in every day experience.

Holly Suzanne Rader began her fine arts career as a classically-trained portrait painter, while in recent years evolving into a sculptor and mixed media artist exploring a wide range of materials including acrylic, photo collage, wax, resin, paper mâché, sequins, glitter and even candy. She is drawn to subject matter typically of vintage glamour. Bright drips of paint, glitter-enhanced photos and high gloss finishes create a visual seduction of color and texture. The overture of her work, whether on canvas or in sculpture, evokes a playful presence of the feminine soul.
While completing her MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design, she travelled extensively and received international recognition. She was a featured artist in the 2002 Women by Women exhibition at the Mona Bismark Foundation in Paris. She was commissioned to create paintings for the 2006 Scad Fashion Gala honoring designer Vera Wang. In 2010, the college commissioned her to create over one hundred mixed-media fiber works to be installed at their new Hong Kong Campus.
Cottage Living Magazine described her work as ‘blending femininity with modern form.’ She has also been featured in the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Le Monde and Le Figaro magazines.

Timothy Atticus, a New York City-based artist, lives and works in Manhattan. Atticus graduated from Cooper Union and received the TAM prize for excellence in Fine Arts upon his graduation in 2011. Atticus is currently pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts and a Masters in Art History at SUNY Purchase in NY. His work was first recognized nationally at The Whitney Biennial in 2008. Atticus’ recent New York solo exhibitions include, ChronoChrome at ARTIFACT and The Cross at Van der Plas Gallery. BART VARGAS:
I put a lot of thought into these paintings. Yet ultimately the act of painting is a meditative form of thoughtful play for me, and I strive for these paintings to communicate visual joy to my audience. Through color, pattern, and movement I want my paintings to celebrate existence.
I paint patterns represented universally throughout human history, including rays, concentric circles, stripes, grids and color fields. I am fascinated with color theory, both the emotion of colors and how they interact with each other. I strive for the image’s energy, movement, color and form to leave the surface, enter space, and engage the viewer.
In essence, each painting is both a celebration of and an exploration into ancient abstract patterns, color theory, identity, and language. With these works, I combine the dualistic aspects of randomness and order to elicit dissonance between ambiguous visual information and intellectual knowledge.
ABOUT BART VARGAS:
Bart Vargas is originally from Bellevue, Nebraska. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his MFA at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
He has exhibited throughout the world, most recently in the exhibitions Concept Winter 2016 at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art (CICA) in Gimpo, South Korea, Maíz at the Museo de Filatelia in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the Kolkata International Art Exhibition at the Rabindranath Tagore Centre’ in Kolkata, India. Previous to this, Vargas has exhibited in the Fourth International ‘From Waste To Art’ Exhibition (2015) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the 2012 Santorini Bienniale for the Arts in Santorini, Greece, and the 2010 Beijing International Art Biennial at the National Art Museum of China.
His work can be found in many collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and has also been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, New American Paintings, and HGTV Magazine.

About Elyse Harrison
Elyse Harrison has had a lifelong career in fine art, maintaining a studio in the Washington, DC area since the late 1970’s. Her work has been reviewed in The Washington Post, The Gazette Newspapers, Modernism Magazine and The Baltimore City Paper and she is a 2021 recipient of the State of Maryland’s Independent Artist Award. From the 2020 catalogue for Elyse Harrison’s most recent exhibition “Communicating Vessels” at The American University Museum, curator Claudia Rousseau writes: “Harrison’s own upbringing had included a Russian grandmother who taught her how to sew on an old treadle machine, instilling in her a love of textiles and decorative patterns that would give her a lifelong inclination towards using pattern in her work. Her enduring love of music is another source for this. Listening to jazz and other contemporary forms as she works, Harrison hears the patterns in them as design layers which she translates into the forms of her paintings. Although her sources do include the Chicago Imagists, comics, and contemporary design, her art comes from a deeper place. She has expressed an enduring connection to the European Surrealists who, she has said “worked without regard for convention and favored the interplay of conscious reality and subconscious dreams in their work.”

Handler continuously evolves in her choice of materials - they are not limited to acrylic, enamel, spray and Flashe paints. They are a nod to the heroic masculinity that characterized the action painting of the past. Just as Handler affects the canvas by making a mark on it, that mark, in turn, affects her and determines the trajectory of the next mark. While spontaneity is key in her work, it is always within the parameters of this dialogue.

Joanne Handler lives and works in New York and Westhampton Beach. She has studied at The Art Students League (New York, NY) and continues to study with prolific artist and mentor James Little. Handler has had two solo exhibitions at The Kaufman Arcade (New York, NY). Recently, Handler’s work has been included in group exhibitions such as The White Room Gallery’s “Zen and the Art of Women” in Bridgehampton, SITE Brooklyn’s “Color: Primary to Tertiary”, Harlem School of the Arts “Shelter 2018”, the New York Borough President’s office “City Views”, First Street Gallery “On and Off the Wall” and Arthouse “The Grow Show”. Danger High Voltage

From the series ‘Real Fake / Fake Fake’, a series of works that was painted between summer 2016 and 2017, a period that has seen remarkable political and social changes. A key element of these developments has been the apparent decline of ‘truth’ and the ascendancy of the label ‘fake’. Facts are no longer debated and contested – they are simply rubbished and dismissed by political interests and their supporters. In the UK, Brexit promises were unceremoniously ditched the day after the referendum. In Syria, the regime and its allies have consistently denied the use of chemical weapons and other human rights abuses, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. And in the US, the political system is all but paralyzed by the rise of ‘fake news’ and partisan accusations and counter-accusations which frequently have little bearing on anything we might recognize as the truth. Meanwhile, Richard Prince’s designation of one of his own artworks as ‘fake’ in early 2017 raises provocative questions about ‘real fakes’ and ‘fake fakes’ in the art world. Miller’s series of ten paintings reflects on ‘the decline of truth’, exploring aspects of deception, fakery and mendacity through the visual vocabulary of dazzle camouflage. Dazzle is a form of geometric, high-contrast patterning developed to protect transatlantic shipping during the First World War. It was intended not to hide a ship, but rather to break up its form and outline and obscure its heading and speed. Like all forms of disruptive camouflage, dazzle is founded on the apparently paradoxical idea that concealment can be achieved through a deceptive form of revelation. While these works might give the initial impression of legibility and openness, a closer look reveals inconsistencies, revisions and distortions. Forms move and float in ambiguous pictorial space, often obscuring other painting layers in a literal ‘cover up’. Each work therefore asks the viewer to consider not only what is revealed, but also what is concealed. This relationship between the seen and unseen is underlined by the interplay of transparency and opacity, and by ambiguity in spatial representation and the definition of volumes. The application of paint suggests weathering and corrosion, underlining the maritime origin of disruptive dazzle schemes. Lines, marks and other compositional elements are left visible in an apparent gesture of ‘truthfulness’, but in many cases these elements are spurious additions, introduced to undermine any suggestion of pictorial integrity.
ABOUT MICHAEL MILLER

Michael Miller, born in Glasgow, Scotland, trained in painting and drawing in Italy, Switzerland and Mozambique. On moving to the USA in 2010, Miller studied abstract painting, drawing and assemblage at the Art Students League of New York. In May 2012, he was awarded the League’s Henri Matisse Estate Merit Scholarship, and in 2014, he was selected as a visiting artist at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

In January 2016, Miller moved to Santiago, Chile, where he currently lives and works. In addition to his regular art practice, Miller has been involved in a range of community-based public art projects in New York, and has supported a number of arts-based not-for-profits as a volunteer artist. From 2012 to 2015 he sat on the board of SONYA (South of the Navy Yards Artists) in Brooklyn. He also sat on the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s exhibit advisory committee. Michael Miller is trained as a social scientist, and has studied at the Universities of Edinburgh, Leicester and Pennsylvania, as well as the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. In 2001, he earned a PhD in contemporary history from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Miller is also a long-standing supporter of human rights, and has published work on a range of issues including violence against children, gender-based violence and the prevention of torture.

Angel Ortiz (LAII, born Manhattan, 1966) grew up on the Lower East Side. As a teenager, he met the artist Keith Haring, who showed interest in his tagging style. The two became fast friends, and sensing an artistic compatibility, they began painting together. LAII’s unique intertwining lines intermingled with Haring’s markings to create a dynamic sense of kinetic surface.
Early in their collaboration, LAII (short for ‘Little Angel’) and Haring had joint exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery (1982) and Fun Gallery (1983). For almost a decade they worked together on artistic projects, including wall murals, canvases, sculptures and other painted objects. Their collaborations are still shown in museums worldwide. Following Haring’s death (1990) LAII continued his own artistic pursuits. To this day he marks work utilizing his distinctive tag and a trademark style of inky curving squiggles.
Haring’s untimely death turned LAII’s world upside-down. Ortiz was left without his best friend and, without the personal relationships to Haring himself, he became estranged from the Haring estate and was separated from the pieces to which he had contributed. Having only received cash stipends from Haring, there was no structured payment plan for him, so he eventually found himself having to rebuild his career from the ground up. For LAII, painting million-dollar paintings with artist icons and spray-painting on New York City’s walls came naturally to him. I don’t want to be rich and famous. What keeps me going is my art, Ortiz says. He continues to live and work in the Lower East Side where he intends to spend the rest of his life. LAII is one of, if not the only, remaining pioneers of the 80s pop-culture boom to still operate from the Lower East Side.
Keith Haring on LAII Aug 24, 1982
I met LAII last summer while I was doing a mural at J.H.S. 22. I had moved back to the Lower East Side after several months of living near Times Square. I noticed his tags immediately and the more time I spent downtown the more tags I saw. They stood out from the other graffiti. I could tell that this person, whoever it was, knew something about drawing that not everybody knows. I asked other graffiti writers if they knew who LAII was. Finally, 3 months later, I met him. LAII turned out to be Little Angel Two. It seemed as if we had already known each other when we met. We hung out together sometimes, going tagging through the depth of the Lower East Side.
On one of his visits to my studio I invited him to tag on a primed yellow square I prepared. After he covered it with LAII signatures I added a few lines, ‘finishing’ it. The contrast between our lines was exciting. There is something uniquely satisfying to me in the fusion between our two styles of drawing. It is a delicate balance between the archaic and extremely modern, classical and psychedelic at the same time. We pursued our collaborations on vases, pillars, paintings and found objects. Street tags were finally placed in a context where people where forced to see them as art.

About Elyse Harrison
Elyse Harrison has had a lifelong career in fine art, maintaining a studio in the Washington, DC area since the late 1970’s. Her work has been reviewed in The Washington Post, The Gazette Newspapers, Modernism Magazine and The Baltimore City Paper and she is a 2021 recipient of the State of Maryland’s Independent Artist Award. From the 2020 catalogue for Elyse Harrison’s most recent exhibition “Communicating Vessels” at The American University Museum, curator Claudia Rousseau writes: “Harrison’s own upbringing had included a Russian grandmother who taught her how to sew on an old treadle machine, instilling in her a love of textiles and decorative patterns that would give her a lifelong inclination towards using pattern in her work. Her enduring love of music is another source for this. Listening to jazz and other contemporary forms as she works, Harrison hears the patterns in them as design layers which she translates into the forms of her paintings. Although her sources do include the Chicago Imagists, comics, and contemporary design, her art comes from a deeper place. She has expressed an enduring connection to the European Surrealists who, she has said “worked without regard for convention and favored the interplay of conscious reality and subconscious dreams in their work.”

BART VARGAS:
I put a lot of thought into these paintings. Yet ultimately the act of painting is a meditative form of thoughtful play for me, and I strive for these paintings to communicate visual joy to my audience. Through color, pattern, and movement I want my paintings to celebrate existence.
I paint patterns represented universally throughout human history, including rays, concentric circles, stripes, grids and color fields. I am fascinated with color theory, both the emotion of colors and how they interact with each other. I strive for the image’s energy, movement, color and form to leave the surface, enter space, and engage the viewer.
In essence, each painting is both a celebration of and an exploration into ancient abstract patterns, color theory, identity, and language. With these works, I combine the dualistic aspects of randomness and order to elicit dissonance between ambiguous visual information and intellectual knowledge.
ABOUT BART VARGAS:
Bart Vargas is originally from Bellevue, Nebraska. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his MFA at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
He has exhibited throughout the world, most recently in the exhibitions Concept Winter 2016 at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art (CICA) in Gimpo, South Korea, Maíz at the Museo de Filatelia in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the Kolkata International Art Exhibition at the Rabindranath Tagore Centre’ in Kolkata, India. Previous to this, Vargas has exhibited in the Fourth International ‘From Waste To Art’ Exhibition (2015) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the 2012 Santorini Bienniale for the Arts in Santorini, Greece, and the 2010 Beijing International Art Biennial at the National Art Museum of China.
His work can be found in many collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, and has also been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, New American Paintings, and HGTV Magazine.

My world is shaped by color from the diverse people with whom I come in contact, travel, unique experiences, and a myriad of observations I make everyday living in the hustle and bustle of NYC. Blueexpressions isn't a tribute to my favorite color or a random name I coined but, rather, reflects the love and great admiration I have for a certain art movement called De Blue Ryder and the style of art that is abstract expressionism. Both depict the world without spelling out every detail in different ways and both have been endlessly inspiring. Art and art history and the conception process an artist goes through to make something, has always intrigued me. Some of these observations and inspirations show up in my work!
