If we look briefly at what makes good art, it is of course to work with what is in front of us. Inventions are good, but if the point of escape into the unknown is the known, even better. Certainly, nothing is more readily available than one’s own family. It is a matrix we will never leave, and if we escape it, we inevitably escape in relation to it. Diana worked with the image material her family generated on many formal and technical layers, visually formulating such larger questions as: who sees whom in which way, and smaller questions, such as: What is one doing when the camera is turned off? To what extent is a skin really our last boundary, and what happens when one dies? Diana exploits every possible representation of (her) family, and transforms it with a sharp eye into an art that is entirely it's own. She uses the whole repertoire of the contemporary photo-filmic infrastructure, from the mobile phone to the memory stick of her father’s product palette from the last 10 years, to the dashcam of her truck-driving mother, to email, also in order to fulfill yet subvert every possible cliché about the East one could imagine. In the end, Diana uses something as personal as family to say something public, close to a narration on something as large as the European transformations that took place during the last 30 years.

Femina Vessel

‘Rooted’ is the third and last part of an unintended trilogy by Henk Wildschut on the lives of refugees and migrants. The exquisitely bound book focuses on the many refugee camp residents who find hope, consolation, and dignity in nurturing a few plants. These miniature gardens are often just a few tin cans planted with flowers, or of a handful of seeds struggling to sprout in a patch of meager soil. They symbolize a longing for something resembling a normal existence. Wildschut has photographed micro-gardens in refugee camps in Tunisia, Jordan, and Lebanon, and recounts the stories of the gardeners who are now stranded, with little choice but to put down roots in foreign soil.

" During quarantine, I started a series called 'primitive portraits,' drawings done in crayon and pencil of artists who’ve had influence in my life. Just as Covid began its pillage in the United States, I was coming off a west coast tour and had plans of spending time upstate to relax and decompress. Then boom—Covid went full throttle and I found myself up here, no reception, no internet, no books, no records, no instruments. So I picked up a pack of crayons at the supermarket as a saving grace to connect me back into avenues of remedial creation. Not only was that inspiring... reconnecting to my deepest roots in art, drawing, the place where creating began for me, and using the same medium (crayon) was kind of wild. "
For Rahill Jamalifard, Habibi's lead singer and a daughter of Iranian immigrants, the group's sound has a deeper meaning: It's a way to honor her roots and pay tribute to the experimental culture that produced Iranian pop music in the 1960s and '70s.

Noud and Ruby decided to spruce up their living room in 1965 by refurnishing the fireplace and adding a new sofa, a tufted corner piece in a classy shade of beige velveteen; not a right-angled design, but a soft, sensual curve snaking around the corner of the room. Noud and Ruby’s redecorating set the scene for what would become a sincere and erotic collaboration between the couple that spanned almost ten years and documented both fashion and fantasy. But the pictures were never intended to be revealed outside their living room. This prompts us to question who we are behind closed doors and what sides of our identities we choose to conceal, even if they give us pleasure or satisfaction.
