Calathea is a genus of several dozen species within the Marantaceae family, native to Brazil and Central America. Several varieties of this plant have become highly valued as house plants due to their unique foliage consisting of velvety patterned leaves. They are surprisingly durable plants, and can bounce right back from dehydration.
In its natural habitat, the calathea is a forest floor dwelling plant which enjoys the shade provided by the plush tropical canopy over head. While it can survive in low light conditions, it may lose its striking color.

The Alocasia polly , also known as the African Mask Plant, is native to subtropical Asia and Australia. This plant appreciates a bright and humid environment in the home or office. Its dark green leaves are shaped like an arrowhead with highly defined silvery green veins.  Though it likes bright light, the leaves can be sensitive to sunburn so its best to keep it slightly away from the window or behind a light curtain. Frequent waterings, plenty of light, and added humidity will keep your Alocasia looking its best. Alocasia are toxic to pets.

Monsetera Deliciosa is native to the rain forests of Mexico and Central America. Its young leaves are smaller with no lobes or holes, but produce their famed perforated leaves as they mature. Rhaphidophora tetrasperma can be hard to come by, but lucky you, we know where to find them. This fast growing plant is often called "Monstera M inima" or "Ginny Philo" and is a highly sought after botanical prize. Its fenestrated leaves bear a resemblance to Monstera Deliciosa as these leaves have a somewhat similar split to them, but unlike Monstera the leaves stay fairly small, making it an excellent long-term roommate. This plant is very easy to care for and has a climbing, vining habit so over time it will need a pole, trellis, or wall to support its growth. It prefers bright indirect light and consistent moisture, though take care not to over water.

String of Hearts ( Ceropegia Woodii) is a flowering plant native to South Africa. Its plump heart shaped leaves range from deep to muted green with pink hued undersides, and the plant will sprout light pink flowers with dark purple centers even when kept indoors. Often grown in hanging baskets, the leaves sprout along trailing vines that hang straight down in a beadlike formation. Best placed on a windowsill or shelf, these plants will grow quickly and can reach upwards of 10ft in length.

The Monstera Adansonii sp Friedrichsthalii, aka the "Swiss Cheese" plant, gets its nickname from the large holes in its leaves called "fenestrations." These holes are a theorized evolutionary advantage that allows light to pass to the lower leaves of the plant in its natural low light environment beneath the jungle canopy, as well as allowing wind to easily pass through the leaves.
This is an easy to care for plant that can be grown in one of two ways: As a hanging basket its vines will form long cascades, but like all Monsteras its natural tendency is to climb, so to maximize the size of the leaves a stake can be placed in its pot for the vines to ascend. The Monstera Adansonii appreciates bright, indirect light and will respond well to high humidity.

Philodendron Brandtianum is an easy and fast growing cascading and climbing plant. Its heart-shaped leaves are a deep green with plentiful silver striations that have an iridescent quality. New leaves have a yellow/orange hue to them that quickly morphs to shades of dark green and silver. Brandtianum generally has a more full and upright habit than its close cousin the Philodendron Cordatum.

In fact it’s so tenacious that the ZZ can regenerate itself from a single leaf cutlet. The ZZ's deep green, glossy leaves have a unique spread that look great on their own or in a cluster of plants. The ZZ prefers bright, indirect light, but can grow in low light conditions. The only real environmental concern is to make sure it doesn’t get cold. Schefflera Amate ( Schefflera actinophylla) appreciates a warm, humid environment, though this variety is more tolerant of dry air than some of its counterparts. It likes a good amount of water unless placed in lower light conditions, in which case its metabolism slows and it becomes sensitive to overwatering.

The Ficus "Audrey" ( Ficus benghalensis) has a striking, minimalist aesthetic, with deep green velvet leaves and a white trunk that thickens as the plant matures. Also called a Banyan tree, over time these trees will send out arial roots that appear as vines. The stalk usually comes staked in these younger trees to ensure straight vertical growth of the trunk.

The Neanthe bella palm is an amazingly adaptive plant. Though native to the rain forests of southern Mexico, it grows well as a houseplant in low light environments and is extremely tolerant of drought. Neanthe bellas prefer indirect light and it is better to underwater than over water these plants. The leaves can become washed out and pale if they receive too much light, so better to keep it on a table top, not directly on the window sill. Neanthe bellas are sold as clusters of small plants. They are slow growing and generally do not grow over 2 feet tall.
