The classically styled Bremont Hawking Limited Edition watch, featuring a retrograde seconds hand and grand date, contains 4 wooden discs inlaid into the back of the watch taken from the desk at which Hawking contemplated the mysteries of the universe, one of his most treasured possessions. This exquisite chronometer also contains some meteorite to symbolise the cosmos which can be seen at the centre of the striking hand-finished closed case back, as well as an etching of stars from the night sky in Oxford, on 8th January 1942, the date that Hawking was born.
The watch’s serial number is printed on paper from original copies of a 1979 seminal research paper commonly referred to as “The ‘nuts’ and ‘bolts’ of gravity”, co-written with one of Hawking’s longest serving collaborators, Professor Gary Gibbons, that sought to understand the thermal properties of black holes. Housed within is the unique BE-33AE movement, with 42-hour power reserve. Only 388 stainless steel and black dial, 88 rose gold with black dial and 88 white gold and blue dial pieces will be made; the numbers referencing the year in which Hawking’s “Brief History of Time” was published, 1988.

The beautifully finished BE-92AV automatic movement, with 42-hour power reserve, can be seen through the open case back and is housed in a 34mm case that is a little over 10.5mm in thickness. The watches are manufactured using Bremont’s trademarked Trip-Tick® case construction and, as with other core collection timepieces, the polished SOLO-34 steel cases will undergo a similar hardening treatment to 2,000 Vickers. Originally inspired from a technique used widely in the aerospace industry, the signature coating provides high impact resistance whilst maintaining its polished surface finish. The convex sapphire crystal is treated with nine layers of anti-reflective coating applied to both sides of the glass for increased legibility. The high standard of finish and attention to detail can be seen in the meticulous machining of the three-part cases which take considerable time and skill to apply.

One of Bremont’s proudest achievements to date was the beginning of an official partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 2019, paying tribute to Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Through this partnership, Bremont became the sole luxury watch producer legitimately allowed to use the signs, symbols and Heraldic Badges of all three services; the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. 2020 sees the introduction of the Broadsword Bronze timepieces, adding to the original line up in Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection. The use of bronze nods to the material’s importance in naval engineering due to its high corrosion resistance to salt water. The new Broadsword case is made of CuSn8 bronze, a solid solution strengthened copper alloy with 8% tin. The high tin content adds to strength, wear and resistance to corrosion. The Bremont Broadsword was originally designed as a contemporary take on the three handed ‘Dirty Dozen’ watch design, a series of timepieces commissioned for the British Army during World War Two when Britain’s Ministry of Defence needed watches to issue to military personnel. The new bronze editions will be available in three different coloured dial and strap variations, complementing the existing range. The ‘slate’, ‘sotek’ (a military green/teal colour) and ‘tobacco’ dials feature a sub-seconds hand at six o’clock as well as multiple layers of luminous paint on both the dial and hands to complete the original specification for the British Army. The Broadsword Bronze houses the chronometer rated BE-95-2AV movement inside its two-piece 40mm case featuring a steel, screw-in case back stamped with the badges of all three services. As a ‘living’ metal, each model will develop its own unique patina over time, meaning no two watches will ever look the same.
