As fashion editor and friend André Leon Talley writes in the introduction, “Valentino Garavani designs his luncheons and dinners, in all of his homes, the way he has created crescendos and allegros vivace throughout his forty-plus-year career as one of the greatest haute couture designers and high-fashion leaders in the world.”
Beauty and entertaining have long been passions of Valentino. “I am in love with beauty,” he admits in the book’s opening. “I have always loved beautiful objects.” Though beyond the tangible objets d’art housed in each of his residences, Valentino’s excellence as a host is defined by the warmth and joy he creates for his guests.
“When you enter his world, you enter the world of luxury; you enter a rare and opulent, yet warm space,” adds Talley. Photographed by renowned Italian photographer Oberto Gili, and organized by residence, this book invites the reader to enjoy various table settings and recipes specific to each home. A flan au chevre may be served on Portuguese porcelain at his ski chalet in Gstaad, while a visit to his home in London reveals a “decorating masterpiece”--says Talley in his text--with an orientalist dining room of blue and white china. The New York City pied-a-terre showcases “table decorations…limitless in their exquisiteness” including Russian dinner-service sets and ruby red Irish glass plates. On T.M. Blue One, guests are served Mediterranean-inspired cuisine atop custom, seafaring-themed dinner service sets. “I love sharing the things in my life with my friends,” Valentino says.
Among all of these luxurious homes, the crown jewel of Valentino’s residential repertoire is the Chateau de Wideville, a historic chateau outside of Paris that is admittedly Valentino’s favorite. There, meals of Italian inspired home cooking, such as risotto Milanese, are presented amongst his collection of rare Meissen swans. “I love antique china sets, like Meissen, Russian, or from P.K. Selesia, a German company from the 1930s” he states.
Though regardless of residence or number of guests, Valentino’s commitment to excellence does not waver. “I am very often alone and enjoying my houses,” Valentino says. “Entertaining thirty or one is the same; the food has to be on a beautiful plate. The dream came true.”
Valentino Garavani, often known simply as Valentino, is a legendary fashion designer and master couturier. He founded his eponymous fashion house in Rome in the late 1950s and has since established an illustrious career designing for the world’s most glamorous women, from royalty to Hollywood icons, including Jackie O, Elizabeth Taylor and modern-day muses like Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway.
From his start designing dresses, Valentino and long-time business partner Giancarlo Giammetti built the Valentino brand into an international empire, now one of the most iconic fashion brands in the world, often associated with his signature color, “Valentino Red”. Though Valentino retired from fashion in 2008, he continues to create and follow his passions.

André Leon Talley was a Vogue contributing editor and the magazine’s former American editor-at-large. In 2014, he was named Artistic Director of Zappos Couture, and had been on the Board of Trustee’s of Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia, since 2000. He had written several monographs, including a limited edition book on Valentino for Franco Maria Ricci, Valentino (1982), a memoir, A. L. T.: André Leon Talley (2003), and Little Black Dress (2013).
Oberto Gili began taking photographs at an early age, but the idea to be a photographer was planted in his head when he saw the film Blow-Up, by Michaelangelo Antonioni. In the early 70s, he moved to London to work as an assistant to Michael Joseph, after which he moved to Milan to work for L’Esperto. He has been traveling the world taking pictures ever since. Gili has worked for Condé Nast, New York Magazine, and The Washington Post Magazine.

For over 35 years, Prosper Assouline and Azzedine Ala ï a were close friends. As a tribute to their friendship, Prosper Assouline decided to republish Assouline’s 1992 “Collector’s Book” on Alaïa’s Summer 1992 show that lays bare the work of a creative artist. In the course of his decades-long career as a photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, as well as a British war correspondent, Cecil Beaton documented lives both famous and quotidian—including his own, in dozens of scrapbooks now held by Sotheby’s London. In these pages, reproduced here for the very first time, the inner vision of the man behind the camera takes center stage. Composed of his own prints and of clippings from magazines, newspapers, and playbills, the pages are an instructive record of his creative process. His famous eye alighted on society figures, royals, dancers, actors, statesmen, and natives in ceremonial garb, picking out visual rhymes and witty juxtapositions. Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton (January 14, 1904 – January 18, 1980) was an English fashion and portrait photographer. Educated at Harrow and St. John’s College, Cambridge, Beaton picked up photography on his own. At the end of his college career in 1925, he had set up his own successful photography studio. One of his earliest clients and, later, best friends was Stephen Tennant; Beaton’s photographs of Tennant and his circle are considered some of the best representations of the “young England” of the twenties and thirties. Beaton is best known for his fashion photographs and society portraits. He worked as a staff photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue in addition to photographing celebrities in Hollywood. He also worked as a stage and film designer, including the musicals Gigi (1958) and My Fair Lady (1965). When he returned to London, he was honored as the official photographer to the Royal Family. During the Second World War, he worked for the British Ministry of Information, as a documentary photographer. James Danziger began his career in the photography world in 1977 as the youngest Picture Editor of The London Sunday Times Magazine. In the 1980s he became Features Editor of Vanity Fair where he was instrumental in repositioning the magazine and in championing Annie Leibovitz, now the magazine’s chief photographer. From 1989 to 2000, Danziger founded and ran the James Danziger Gallery in New York City, one of the world’s top photography galleries, representing such established photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Giacomelli and Joel Meyerowitz. He later became Director of Magnum Photos’ American operations and now runs Danziger Projects, a contemporary projects office and gallery in the Chelsea district of New York City.

In 2010, Claiborne began her first body of work, a collection of portraits of women in her life, which served as inspiration for her best-selling debut book, American Beauty, published in the spring of 2012. Soon after its release, Swanson moved to Los Angeles and began working on Young Hollywood, her second book of portraits, released in the Fall 2014. In tandem with the creation of her books, Claiborne collaborates with American and European fashion brands, and most recently worked with Clé de Peau Beauté as she photographed her book, Mother and Child. Francesca Bortolotto Possati is the CEO of Venice’s Bauer Hotel group. Among her many honors, she has been named one of the world’s “30 Most Admired Educators” by DesignIntelligence and “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young, and was awarded the inaugural Elle Decor Vision Award, and has been appointed a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Embassy in the U.S. She currently serves on the National Advisory Board of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Wallace enjoys spending time with her husband and her four children.
Established in 1978, the Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited university, offering more than 100 academic degree programs in 42 majors at locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia; Hong Kong; Lacoste, France; and online via SCAD eLearning. SCAD enrolls more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 100 countries. The school’s innovative curriculum is enhanced by professional-level technology, equipment, and learning resources, as well as opportunities for internships, professional certifications, and collaborative projects with corporate partners. In 2014, the prestigious Red Dot Design Rankings placed SCAD in the top ten universities in the Americas and Europe.
