For over two decades, the Vitra Design Museum has been making miniature replicas of milestones in furniture design from its collection. The Miniatures Collection encapsulates the entire history of industrial furniture design – moving from Historicism and Art Nouveau to the Bauhaus and New Objectivity, from Radical Design and Postmodernism all the way up to the present day.
Hans J. Wegner is widely considered to be one of the major innovators of traditional furniture making and the father of Danish Modernism. At the time when he created his 3-Benet Skalstol design, the two-dimensional forming of laminated wood and plywood was no longer a novelty. However, in order to stabilize the legs, in this model Wegner refined the existing technology by dividing the frame of glued laminated wood at the joints in the legs into two separate strands, the angles of which held each other in check. In terms of design and color, he was strongly influenced here by Japanese tradition. This model only ever existed as a prototype, both with and without upholstery.

Seraph Square Pendant Light

The Wooden Dolls by Alexander Girard are a large family of wooden figures representing human and animal characters. Girard designed them in 1952 for his own use as decorative objects in his Santa Fe home. These originals, which are part of the Girard estate in the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum, served as models for the current re-editions. Precisely replicated down to the last detail, the many different Wooden Dolls are still fabricated and painted by hand today, just like the vintage pieces by Alexander Girard. And even if the differences between them are only very slight: each wooden figure is a unique, individual product, truly one of a kind.

Assassin O-Ren Ishii, known by her code name Cottonmouth, was the first target on The Bride’s kill list.

Ian Thornton says of his design of the Shipwright Chandelier that he wanted to create a large chandelier with a nautical theme. He achieved this in spades with the abaca rope that wraps the ring holding the bobeches and candle arms. The Plywood Elephant holds a prominent place among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses. In the early 1940s Charles and Ray Eames successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. Among the early plywood designs, the Elephant is one of the most difficult to produce. Tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. Designed at the same time as their children's furniture, the Plywood Elephant can also be seen as a playful counterpart to the leg splints developed by the Eameses for military applications – which were the very first mass-produced objects made of three dimensionally molded plywood. Requiring complex fabrication methods, the Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1945-46. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames Family. In 2007 Vitra produced the first commercial production of the legendary Eames Plywood Elephant as a limited Collector's Edition.
