"An exquisite jewel," is how designer David Trubridge describes the kina, the Maori name for a tiny sea urchin native to the waters in the designer's adopted home of New Zealand. It also served as the form for his Kina Pendant Light. A passion for the environment and earth drives the construction of all David's work, primarily made of renewable bamboo and flat-packed to reduce freighting and packaging resources and the identical pieces make home assembly a snap, literally. Endlessly adaptable, the light is available in 2 sizes and 9 stock colors (custom colors upon request) in natural or painted bamboo with nylon clip fasteners. The celebrated designing craftsman ended up in his adopted home of New Zealand after he, his wife and their two sons sold everything and set off on a yacht for a world adventure. It culminated in 1985 when they decided to remain there. While an artist-in-residence, he built a house and suddenly found himself with further commissions. Before realizing homes, lamps and furniture, David left Newcastle University in 1972 with a degree in Naval architecture. His work has appeared in countless museums, including the Victoria & Albert and the Pompidou Centre. That barely scratches the surface of his fascinating story and work ethos.

Description

Minimalism was never so crystal clear. Mouth-blown glass with a polished edge form the clear lampshade of this classic re-imagined by lighting designer Sofie Refer. Whether on her own or under her studio Refer + Staer, the Danish lighting designer continually plays with the concept of "clear." There's even 7.5 feet of transparent cord that can be trimmed to suit. The high grade of the glass is paired with a fine porcelain socket and stainless-steel accents. A white, low-profile canopy blends into most ceilings. The Bulb SR1 is the smaller sister of the Mega Bulb SR2 (incandescent bulb not included). When the Bulb came out, it quickly took several accolades including the coveted Good Design Award in 2001—two years before Sofie graduated from the Danish Design School. The gal knows her lighting. Nelson was inspired by a set of silk-covered Swedish hanging lamps that he wanted to acquire for his office, but he found the price to be prohibitive. An ingenious and resourceful designer, he went on to create the first set of Bubble Lamps using a translucent white plastic spray. Nelson drew from elemental, organic shapes in making variations including sconces, table lamps and floor lamps.

Pendants include a brushed, nickel-plated steel ceiling plate measuring 5.25" and a 6-foot cord. Product is UL-listed and rated for bulbs up to 150 watts. Bulb is not included.

Fascinated by the street lamps, designers Kasper Rønn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen detached the street lamp from its original use and transferred the shape and combination of materials in order to design and outstanding, indoor pendant—the Mass Light. This pendant shade, part of designer Rina Ono’s lighting collection for Hayashi Kougei, is made from traditional Japanese washi paper. There are so many things to love about it! It’s incredibly well crafted – from the same area as most of our washi paper products in the Gifu prefecture – and it emits a very diffused light through the paper, giving everything around a soft glow. I was also drawn to the collection because of the exquisite forms the pendants are available in.

Studio Pendant Light

Designed in 1950 by Swedish-American design icon, Greta Grossman. Originally produced in Sweden, this lamp was Grossman's 10th design for Swedish manufacturer Bergboms (hence the name). A black lacquered shade is supported on a black cloth cord. The lamp has an opaline glass diffuser which casts a soft, warm glow. Brass ceiling plate included. Today, the lamp is manufactured in Denmark by Gubi - a Copenhagen-based purveyor of both historic and contemporary design. Certified authentic and produced to Grossman's original specifications.
